Nutrition is so important. I could talk about it all day long! An anti-inflammatory forage based diet is simpler than most people think, too! A lot of horses who look "overweight" are actually just dealing with an inflammatory burden that makes them look puffy. If you're interested in learning a little more and considering making the change, I'd love to get your started in the right direction!
It would be comforting to identify a single cause, a villain we could name and eliminate.
I wrote that in Equine Functional Nutrition: Understanding Root Cause to Restore Vitality, and then spent the rest of the paragraph explaining why we do not get one.
Diet, environment, management practices, social structures, and the emotional lives of horses as sentient beings all contribute to health or to its deterioration. No single factor creates chronic disease in isolation, and no single intervention resolves it. Anyone promising you otherwise is selling something.
And yet, among all the variables within our control, none exerts broader influence than what enters the body through the feed bucket. Nutrition touches every system, every cell, every metabolic process. It is the foundation on which every other intervention succeeds or fails.
That is not a claim that food fixes everything. It is a claim about leverage, and about where the leverage actually sits.
Share this with somebody who is still looking for the easy fix.

Murray is dealing with some hind end tightness that we have been working to address for a few months. He started so stoic, and didn't really give me a ton of feedback. Which, makes massaging a little trickier. After several massages he is no longer quiet with his feedback. I'm also seeing a decrease in his tightness.
They tell us how they're feeling, we just have to learn to listen!

This is such great information for any horse owner but especially if you have a horse that struggles with hoof health.
HEALTHY HOOF SUPPORT
Hoof health needs most importantly proper minerals via nutrition and circulation provided by movement and manual help!
Two minerals that greatly impact healthy hoof growth are Copper and Zinc.
Copper and Zinc should be obtained through forage first,-however, our soils, grasses and hays aren't as rich in copper and zinc as they once were.
We can absolutely supplement these important minerals-but quality and form matters.
Synthetic forms are less bio available that pure forms.
Some great ways to ensure your horses availability is to test your forages, utilize quality HTMA testing and supplement with quality forage mineral balancers and avoid feeding processed feed stuffs that lack quality and include inflammatory ingredients.
Iron is quite abundant in our horses natural environments via soils, forages and water.
Iron depletes copper, zinc and other pertinent minerals.
Feeding anything with added iron can greatly impact our horses ability to absorb copper and zinc.
Testing suspected iron sources is a great tool!
Water can in most cases be easily filtered to reduce iron, additional copper and zinc can be added to feed plans to account for any iron overload depletion.
Reminder that a healthy hoof is a foundational part of their whole health.
If you are looking for any help revising your horses nutritional plan to optimize hoof health I am always more than happy to help.
