I have been giving back in silence for a few years now.

I keep waiting for the 'Right Moment' to take it to the next level.... but as many of us know, the 'Right Moment' may never come.... so let's just get to it.

How I started:

I had a foster mom come to me with 3 little ones that she was fostering and had no idea what to do with their hair. Of course, I was able to help her out, and she would bring them every month. Well, as you can imagine, that can get expensive, and fast. So she was not able to continue coming. I did not find out why until I had moved away, and that bothered me because I saw how much they enjoyed getting their hair done and would have worked something out with her.

So then...

I started to offer a service for hair care to children who are in a group home setting at an extremely low cost. There were a few caretakers that would pay for the service, but while getting their hair done, many of the young girls would tell me the stories of what they had been through and still go through, and how their allowance was barely enough to get their necessities and how they had to save their own monthly allowance until they had enough for a hair appointment. That just did not sit well with me, so I began to position myself to be able to provide these services to them for free.

Getting their hair done was more than just a new look. It was expression. It was a confidence builder. It was a much needed conversation with someone who understood. It was a space of peace away from their everyday life. It was a positive experience for their mental health. It boosted their self-esteem.

I have not completed my mission, to take this on full force, but for now, I will do what I can.

I will be open to donations for those who want to sponsor a kid, rather it be a one time sponsorship, monthly, or yearly. I'll be working on that part, but until then, if you know of any group homes with children who struggle with hair care, send them my way...
