Laying out in the sun is a classic way to achieve a nice, golden tan. It will also give you that extra boost of Vitamin D, which is known to improve overall mood.
While there’s nothing better than laying by the beach or pool and soaking up the sun, exposure to UV rays does come with many risks such as sunburn, wrinkling, dry skin, and dark spots. So, the beautiful tan you have now may not look so great in years to come.
Natural tanning could also potentially lead to different types of skin cancers like melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, or squamous cell carcinoma.

Here are 9 fantastic tanning tips to achieve a long-lasting and darker tan:
1. Exfoliate before tanning
Gently scrub your skin using an exfoliator. This will help remove dead skin cells and keep your pores closed during the tanning process.
2. Use moisturizing products
Apply body lotions after your tan. This will make your tan last longer and prevent dryness or flaking from the sun.
3. Try using oils with naturally occurring SPF.
While these should not replace your normal sunscreen, certain oils like avocado, coconut, raspberry, and carrot can be used for an extra dose of hydration and SPF protection.
4. Stay hydrated
Drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your skin glowing and hydrated.
5. Don’t stay outside for longer than your skin can create melanin.
Melanin is the pigment responsible for tanning. Everyone has a melanin cut-off point, which is usually 2 to 3 hours. After this amount of time, your skin will not get darker in a certain day. If you tan past that point, you’ll be putting your skin in harm’s way.
6. Remove makeup before tanning
Wash your face thoroughly before tanning, so your tan does not come on blotchy.
7. Wear an SPF 30 sunscreen or higher
An SPF 30 sunscreen or higher will protect you from the sun’s harmful rays and prevent sunburns.
8. Avoid contact with hot water
Avoid hot tubs or showering in hot water as it causes skin sensitivity following a sun tan.
9. Eat nutritious foods
Nutritious fruits and vegetables like carrots, kale, cherries, and watermelon are known to boost your overall tan.

SUMMER SKIN PROBLEMS YOU CAN PREVENT

❗️Acne breakouts. When sweat mixes with bacteria and oils on your skin, it can clog your pores. If you have acne-prone skin, this often means breakouts.

❇️PREVENT ACNE BREAKOUTS
* Blow sweat from your skin with a clean towel or cloth. Wiping sweat off can irritate your skin, which can lead to a breakout.
* Use non-comedogenic products on your face, neck, back, and chest. The label may also say “oil free” or “won’t clog pores.”

❗️Dry, irritated skin. When outdoor air is hot and humid, you can still have dry irritated skin. The biggest culprits are spending time in the sun, pool, and air-conditioning.

❇️PREVENT DRY, IRRITATED SKIN
* Apply sunscreen before going outdoors, using one that offers broad-spectrum protection, SPF 30+, and water resistance.
* Use a mild cleanser to wash your skin. Soaps and body washes labeled “antibacterial” or “deodorant” can dry your skin.
* Slather on a fragrance-free moisturizer after every shower and bath. Moisturizer works by trapping water in your skin, so you’ll need to apply it within 5 minutes of taking a shower or bath.
* Carry moisturizer with you, so you can apply it after washing your hands and when your skin feels dry.

❗️Sunburn. Getting sunburn can spoil summer fun and increase your risk of developing skin cancer.

❇️PREVENT SUN BURN
Apply sunscreen that offers broad-spectrum protection, SPF 30+, and water resistance

❗️Melasma. Being out in the sun can make those brown to gray-brown patches on your face more noticeable.

❇️PREVENT MELASMA
Apply sunscreen to all skin not covered by clothing. Choose a sunscreen that offers:
* Broad-spectrum protection
* Water-resistance
* SPF of 30 or more
* Zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide to physically limit the effects of the sun’s rays on your skin and iron oxide

Apply sunscreen 15 minutes before going outside, and reapply it at least every two hours.
