Fordyce Granules?

Those tiny pale bumps on the lips are Fordyce granules: visible oil glands without attached hair follicles. They’re common on people with oily skin type, harmless, and not contagious.

Cosmetic tattooing can help camouflage the pale spots by blending their color with the surrounding lips, similar to scar camouflage tattoo process.

The key is color, not texture. Tattooing doesn’t remove the glands, so the raised texture will remain.

The goal is subtle, natural-looking camouflage, not a cure or perfectly smooth lips.

Your face shouldn’t be someone else’s repeat-business plan. Let’s talk about it.

Don’t get me wrong, touch-ups have their place. But if you specifically asked for brows or lips that last, you deserve to know what pigment your artist is using and why.

The hardest part of being a PMU artist is constantly finding new clients. But choosing pigment just to get you back sooner and keep ourselves busy? That’s not putting the client first.

And it’s even worse if your brows or lips are still very saturated with pigment, but your artist is telling you that you need an annual touch-up anyway. The goal is a natural result, not piling on pigment until you have a “nail salon” face tattoo.

Before you book that yearly touch-up, ask: “Do I actually need more pigment, or am I just on your calendar?”

The first question you ask about a PMU class tells me A LOT👀

If your first question is:

“Is this the fastest class?”
“How cheap can I get it?”
“How quickly can I get my license?”

…we have a problem.

Because you’re not learning how to do eyebrows.

You’re learning how to tattoo someone’s face.

That should make you VERY picky about who teaches you.

Instead, ask:

-What techniques will I actually learn?
-How much hands-on training is included?
-Will I work on live models?
-How many models will I get to practice on?
-What happens after I graduate? Is there ongoing support?
-Will I learn color theory, skin types, needle configurations, mapping, sanitation, correction work, and proper technique?
-Will I actually leave feeling prepared to work on real clients?

Because a PMU class shouldn’t just teach you how to pass a licensing requirement.

It should teach you how to take responsibility for the face sitting in your chair.

And honestly?

If your main goal is to find the quickest and cheapest way to get a license and be done with it, PMU probably isn’t the career for you.

There is a BIG difference between
getting a certificate and becoming a skilled PMU artist.

Redheads always ask me the same question:
“But will the pigment color actually match my hair?” 👩🏻‍🦰

And this before & right after is the perfect example of why you shouldn’t be afraid of customized PMU pigment.

The BEFORE photo shows my client’s fully healed brows after her first session, when we originally did Nano Brows using a hair-stroke technique. This means you can actually see what the pigment looks like once it is completely healed and settled into the skin — soft, warm, and beautifully matched to her natural redhead coloring.

At her touch-up, we decided to switch techniques.

Because she has an oilier skin type and realized she prefers a slightly more filled-in, defined — but still natural — brow, we chose Powder Ombré Brows for her second session.

The AFTER photo shows the Powder Ombré Brows freshly done, so they will still soften and lighten as they heal.

For my redhead clients, I never simply choose a generic “redhead pigment.” I customize the color based on your natural brow hair, skin tone, undertone, freckles, and overall coloring.

And this is exactly why I love showing healed results. Fresh PMU is pretty, but healed PMU tells you the real story. 🤎

So if you’re a redhead worried your permanent brows will turn out too brown, too dark, too gray, or just not you — proper pigment selection makes all the difference.

The goal isn’t to match your hair to a bottle of pigment. It’s to create a color that looks like it naturally belongs on your face. 👩🏻‍🦰
