✨Birth Planning: But Make it Anti-Racist!

What should birth planning look like for Black families?

First and foremost, having a care provider that listens to you and validates concerns is crucial to the birth experience. If you cannot have open and honest conversations with your provider during pregnancy, do you think you’ll be able to during labor and delivery? Probably not.

Choosing your village of support and ensuring your needs will be met during birth & postpartum can be stress relieving. Preventing as much cortisol during this time is key to a healthy pregnancy.

Having support during postpartum is imperative for everyone, but especially for our Black families. Knowing the early warning signs of postpartum complications and having a plan in place to address them is absolutely necessary.

✨Black Maternal Health Week is April 11-17th. If you know me at all, you know I am incredibly passionate about changing the landscape around birth for Black people in the United States.

Raising awareness is incredibly important and I do that all year long. That will never stop. This week will be a little different. I’m going to call on my allies to raise awareness while I provide the action steps to do the work.

The first step to healing is acknowledging the presence of racism in the healthcare space. We’re going to talk about what that can look like and how to call it out.

Once we’ve identified what it looks like, we prepare for it. For birthing people, let’s create a plan to navigate racial bias in pregnancy, labor and delivery, and during postpartum. We know it’s inevitable, but how will we face it directly?

Presenting... THE COMMUNITY BABY SHOWER ✨💕

I’ve seen other communities create a shower for their expecting families and have even supported other communities, but I want to bring it home.

Let’s talk about Oxytocin 💕

Since is almost Valentine’s Day, it only seems fitting to talk about the love drug!
This powerful hormone drives labor and delivery, so the more oxytocin on board the better. I highly encourage couples to be sensual with one another to help increase Oxytocin levels.

💕Ways to encourage Oxytocin during labor & delivery:

•Kissing

Happy 2021 to all my fellow birth workers, to all the soon-to-be parents, and those that support them.

I took the first few days of the year to refocus my goals (both personal and professional) and am ready to hit the ground running in 2021! Expanding my network, knowledge base and business are all on the agenda.

What are some learning opportunities or virtual courses is everyone looking forward to? What’s on the reading list?

Support from a distance.

While I am still offering in-person doula services, for some, this is still not an option. With the current restrictions, some hospitals are only allowing one support person during labor and delivery. A doula is there to provide support to both the laboring person and their partner. This remains true, even during a pandemic.

This fact is what inspired me to become a doula. Childbirth is supposed to be one of the happiest times of a woman’s life, but for many women in the US it is a matter of life and death. There are many factors that contribute to this statistic, including a lack of access to childbirth education and adequate prenatal care. As a doula, evidence-based information and prenatal conversations are my priorities. With knowledge comes confidence. Every woman deserves to go into labor feeling supported and prepared.

Every woman deserves a doula.

Every woman deserves to be supported through the one of the most exciting times of her life. I decided to become a doula because I wanted to empower and provide support for women and birthing families.
