The differences between natural light and studio light.

One of the biggest things people don’t realize about makeup is how much lighting changes what you see.

Studio lighting tends to pull more contrast, depth, and detail, which can make glam appear more dramatic and defined.

Natural light softens everything and shows how the makeup wears in real life. Skin usually looks glowier, smoother, and more dimensional.

This is why makeup for photos, weddings, events, and everyday wear often need different techniques and product choices.

Good makeup isn’t about looking perfect in one type of light. It should translate beautifully no matter what.

Which lighting do you prefer for makeup photos?

A few questions I ask before starting hair and makeup for a photoshoot or event:

1️⃣ Location details & time of day

Outside vs. inside, natural vs. artificial lighting, outfit changes… all of these things matter when deciding how your hair and makeup need to show up and last throughout the day (cue the extra hold hairspray)

2️⃣ The photographer’s aesthetic

Do they edit photos moody, soft, bright, vibrant, true-to-color? My job is to make sure your makeup photographs beautifully no matter how the final images are edited

3️⃣ How are you feeling?

Let’s be honest. Photoshoots and being the center of attention can feel awkward when you aren’t used to it, and sometimes emotional too. You might be crying, laughing, dancing, sweating, hugging people all night, so your glam needs to be everything-proof. I also want to make sure you feel calm, comfortable, and genuinely happy in my chair

4️⃣ I’ll ask about the things that make you smile

Your hair and makeup should enhance your natural features and expressions, not work against them.
I want to see the smiles, laughs, nose crinkles, and everything in between that comes with real emotion. It helps both of us feel more relaxed during the appointment, and it helps me customize your makeup placement so it still looks beautiful hours later

5️⃣ Skin type, how your hair holds curl, & any concerns you want addressed

Basic, but necessary. Makeup won’t last if I prep your skin incorrectly, but I won’t know just by looking at you that your cheeks get dry, your forehead gets red, or your chin gets oily after a few hours. The goal is to prepare for what might happen later, not just what’s happening right now

6️⃣ “Can I touch your face?”

Yes, your makeup artist should absolutely be asking this proactively. Some people are very sensitive to facial touch, and comfort matters. I want every client to feel relaxed, respected, and comfortable every step of the appointment
