🧑🏻🎨✨ PMU SECRETS with Lily Thien | CLIENT CONSULTATION
If your client takes daily aspirin or certain medications and supplements that affect bleeding, you may see more bleeding during the procedure than expected. And excessive bleeding can make pigment implantation more challenging.
Blood and lymph fluid can interfere with pigment placement, making it harder to work cleanly and consistently. Even with excellent technique, excessive bleeding may contribute to uneven pigment retention and patchy healed results.
Here’s what you need to do before every appointment.
Ask every client directly about medications and supplements that may affect bleeding, including aspirin, regularly used ibuprofen, fish oil, vitamin E, and recent alcohol consumption. Don’t assume they’ll mention these on their own. Many clients simply don’t realize these details matter.
💬 The intake question I recommend:
“Are you taking any medications or supplements regularly, including aspirin, pain relievers, vitamins, or fish oil?”
If a client reports something that could increase bleeding, assess their suitability for the procedure and follow your professional protocols. Never instruct a client to stop prescribed medication, including aspirin, without guidance from their prescribing healthcare professional. Even supplements and over-the-counter medications may require individualized advice. Do not apply a blanket 48-hour discontinuation rule to everyone.
Remember, your consultation isn't just about skin type, brow shape, and color selection. It's also about understanding your client's health and identifying potential risks before you begin.
🤎A thorough consultation protects your client, your work, and your professional reputation.

WEDNESDAY: PMU SECRETS with Lily Thien - Eps. 2: Color Theory
If a client's brows healed grey, your pigment didn't shift. your undertone was wrong from the start.
Grey healed result almost always means the pigment lacked enough warm base to survive oxidation. Cool-toned browns look perfectly matched in the cap. Under the skin, after 4–6 weeks, they drop their red and yellow first. What's left is the blue-grey base.
Fix for your next appointment: before you pick your colour, look at what's left of their old work in natural light. If there's any grey or blue sitting in the skin, you need a warm modifier. not a brand-new pigment. I use a small percentage of a rust-orange corrector blended into my chosen brown. How much? Start at 10%. On skin that's already showing significant grey retention, I'll go up to 20%.
The goal isn't to cancel the grey in the room. It's to deposit enough warmth that when the pigment finishes healing, it lands where you intended.
Test your blend on your colour ring first. Then commit.

💄 WEDNESDAY: PMU SECRETS with Lily Thien
Struggling with poor pigment retention? Before you blame the pigment, troubleshoot your technique.
There are three things I teach my students to look at first:
✨ Skin preparation
✨ Needle depth
✨ How much you’re working the skin
Too shallow, and pigment may not implant properly. Too deep or too many passes can create unnecessary trauma and affect the healed result.
And remember, every client’s skin is different. What works beautifully on one client may not work the same way on another.
💡 Before changing your pigment, troubleshoot your technique first, and keep practicing your technique. The more you understand your hand speed, pressure, depth, and skin response, the more consistent your results will become.
Save this for your next appointment and share it with a PMU artist who needs to hear this. 💕

Week one students and week eight students can make the exact same stroke—but the outcome is completely different.
Not because the motion changed.
Because the confidence behind it did.
Hesitation shows up in the skin. A slow, uncertain stroke drags pigment, catches on the edges, and breaks midway. A confident, committed stroke deposits pigment evenly and lifts clean.
This is something you can't learn from a slide deck or a YouTube video. You have to work through the hesitation until your hand stops asking for permission and starts trusting your training.
Swipe to see the difference side by side.
Practice doesn't just make perfect—it builds confidence. And confidence creates beautiful results.

The client who changed how I teach mapping.
She had one brow sitting 4mm higher than the other. Had for her whole life. She didn't mention it at intake. I almost didn't catch it until I stepped back.
Not in close. Not in the mirror she was holding. From across the room, standing still, looking at her face the way a stranger would.
Now I teach that step before we ever pick up a pencil. Step back. Cross your arms. Look at the whole face.
Most brow errors aren't technique errors. They're measurement errors nobody caught because they never stopped leaning in.
