What we know:
The nutritional needs of children younger than 2 years are high relative to their energy requirements, which means - there is very little room for unnecessary energy intake from processed foods, "empty calories", and sweets when we are trying to optimize their nutrient intake for growth and development.
ππ»To meet the children's nutritional needs without providing excess calories the combinations of foods need to focus on meeting the recommended key intake nutrients like iron, zinc, healthy fats, etc. If we are meeting the estimated needs for these key intake nutrients then it doesn't leave room for added sugars and foods lacking in nutrients. π§
Others things we know: ππ»
Taste and flavor preferences are highly malleable in this life stage, this is why it's important to expose the child to healthy foods and avoid high exposures to hyper-palatable foods (i.e. foods with added sugar and high sodium).
What they learn to prefer during this life stage is what they will prefer long-term. We need to be fostering a healthy dietary pattern from the start and building life-long health habits. π
The foods we provide our children in the first 1000 days of life sets the stage for all the days which means we can either foster a healthy diet from the start or not. Proper nutrition in this time period has been linked to greater health in adult years. It is so important!
I have so many services to help you fuel your baby well and feel confident as well as educated on all things you need to know about starting solids and breastfeeding. π
