A little peek inside education day at dbs ✂️📚

This month we got s**ggy. 😏

Our team spent the day breaking down the structure of a s**g, learning how all those layers work together, practicing new techniques and figuring out how to make the shape their own.

And this is what education actually looks like around here. Watching. Asking questions. Trying something. Checking the shape. Cutting some more. Occasionally staring at your mannequin wondering what exactly you’ve done. 😂 And then suddenly… it clicks.

No matter what level we’re at behind the chair, there is always something new to learn.

We dedicate time every month to education because growing as stylists means our guests get the very best version of us, too. 🖤

And judging by these mannequins, things got appropriately s**ggy. 🤘

Things I’ve learned while photographing hair:

Apparently my camera needs to see a FACE to activate portrait mode. 📸

Which means somewhere between all the beautiful curl shots on my phone, I have accumulated an entire collection of Jenna and Ninon being my very cooperative test subjects.

Well… cooperative-ish. 😂

These two are my right hands AND my left hands. They help me with my guests, style alongside me, keep things moving and apparently provide essential portrait mode activation services.

First color EVER and Kelsey said, “I trust you.” 💜🩵

We went into this color journey with an open mind and let her hair tell us where we could go. Since we didn’t know exactly how her virgin curls would lift, the goal wasn’t to force a predetermined color. We kept the developer low, lifted gently, and created our palette based on the canvas her hair gave us.

The result? A dimensional mix of deep berry, violet and pops of teal using Pulp Riot. 🎨✨ And just LOOK at those curls in the sunshine!

Because fun color is even better when we’re respecting the integrity of the curl along the way. 🌀

✂️ It’s all about the shape.

For Reginald’s cut, we took off some length and brought his curls back into a fuller, rounder shape that lets all of that natural texture shine. ✨
