Spring & Fall Lash Shed: Fact or Fiction? 09/24/2026

Do lashes really shed more in spring and fall? 🌸🍂 Our latest blog dives into the science behind seasonal lash changes—and what that means for your retention and aftercare. Read the full breakdown and get pro tips to keep your extensions looking full year-round: https://wix.to/YSdVnVb

Spring & Fall Lash Shed: Fact or Fiction? Every spring and fall, lash artists hear some version of the same thing:“I swear I'm losing more lashes than usual.”And if you've worn extensions for several years, you may feel like you can almost predict it. Your retention is normally great, then suddenly you come in for a fill and there seem ...

Do Lash Extensions Damage Your Natural Lashes? Let's Talk About Lash Health.

One of the questions we hear all the time is:
“Will lash extensions ruin my natural lashes?”

It's an understandable concern—and there's a lot of conflicting information online.

The short answer is that simply wearing lash extensions does not automatically mean unhealthy natural lashes. How extensions are selected, applied, maintained and removed matters tremendously.

At Lash Out, natural-lash health isn't something we think about after your extensions are applied. It should be part of the decision-making process when designing your set in the first place.

And here's something that sometimes surprises people:
Mascara isn't completely harmless either.

So instead of asking, “Are extensions bad and mascara good?”, a better question is:
What are you doing to your natural lashes every day—and how carefully is it being done?

Your natural lashes are supposed to shed
First, let's clear up one of the biggest misconceptions about extensions.

Natural eyelashes have their own growth and shedding cycle. Extensions are attached to individual natural lashes, so when that natural lash reaches the end of its cycle and sheds, its extension goes with it.

Seeing an extension with a natural lash attached does not automatically mean the extension pulled the lash out.

Individual extensions are designed to be applied to individual natural lashes rather than glued directly to the skin. A properly trained lash artist also needs to consider the strength of the natural lash when choosing an appropriate extension.

That's one reason we are such believers in customization instead of putting the same lash set on everyone.

Lighter isn't just a look. Weight matters.

A beautiful set doesn't have to mean the longest, thickest, heaviest lashes possible.

For someone concerned about maintaining healthy natural lashes, a Classic set or a lighter, natural Hybrid set can provide definition without creating an unnecessarily heavy look.

The medical concern that comes up repeatedly with extensions is traction—continued pulling or excessive weight on natural hair can contribute to traction alopecia. Eye-health and dermatology sources recognize excessive traction as a potential cause of natural lash loss.

That's exactly why lash selection matters.

A professional artist should be looking at what your natural lashes can reasonably support—not simply how dramatic we can make them.

More isn't always better.

But what about mascara?

Mascara is so normal that we rarely think of it as something we're doing to our lashes.

Apply it.

Sometimes curl them first.

Maybe apply another coat.

Wear it all day.

Then remove it at night.

Repeat tomorrow.

That doesn't mean mascara is inherently damaging. The FDA says most eye cosmetics are safe when they're used properly. But eye cosmetics can become contaminated, cause irritation or infection, and need to be used and replaced hygienically. The FDA specifically recommends replacing mascara regularly and never sharing it.

There is also research suggesting everyday eye cosmetics aren't completely biologically neutral.
A study of 220 healthy women compared people who used no eye makeup with women using eyeliner, mascara or both. Researchers found significant differences in tear-film stability and meibomian-gland findings among eye-makeup users compared with nonusers. That doesn't prove mascara “damages your eyelashes,” but it does illustrate why describing mascara as completely harmless while assuming extensions are automatically harmful is an oversimplification.

The American Academy of Ophthalmology also notes that irritation from cosmetics, leaving eye makeup on too long, lash-extension use/removal and eyelash curlers can all contribute to increased shedding.

In other words:
Neither option gets a free pass simply because it's familiar.
Think about the mechanical part, too
There's another practical difference that's worth considering.

A mascara routine usually requires daily application and daily removal. Depending on someone's habits, that can involve wiping, rubbing, cleansing and manipulating the lashes hundreds of times over the course of a year.

Extensions eliminate the need to coat those lashes with mascara every morning and scrub mascara off every night.

That doesn't mean science has proven extensions cause less damage than mascara—we don't have good evidence to make that blanket claim.

But it does mean the comparison is more nuanced than:
Mascara = healthy. Extensions = damage.

For some clients, a carefully selected Classic or natural Hybrid set means they can wake up with defined lashes and eliminate much of that daily cosmetic routine.

Where lash extensions CAN cause problems
We don't believe in pretending extensions have zero risk.

Medical literature has documented complications associated with lash extensions, including allergic reactions, irritation, blepharitis, infection, corneal problems and traction-related lash loss. Adhesives and improper application can cause problems around an extremely sensitive part of the body.

That's why who applies your lashes matters.

Professional application doesn't magically eliminate every risk. But training, product selection, sanitation, appropriate extension weight, careful isolation and recognizing when someone shouldn't receive a service are important parts of responsible lash artistry.

Even the American Academy of Ophthalmology's consumer guidance says eyelash extensions can be done safely when professionally applied, while noting that poor application can irritate the eye and surrounding skin.

Aftercare is part of lash health!

Your lash artist can do everything correctly during your appointment, but what happens between appointments matters too.

Extensions and the lash line need to be kept clean.
They shouldn't be picked, pulled or intentionally peeled off.

And if you're experiencing persistent redness, swelling, itching, pain or another unusual eye symptom, that's not something to “tough out” for pretty lashes. Extensions should be professionally assessed/removed as appropriate, and eye symptoms may require evaluation by an eye-care professional.

Good lash care isn't about seeing how long you can go without touching your extensions.

Clean lashes are happy lashes.

What we look for at Lash Out
Our goal isn't to put the biggest possible set on every person who walks through the door.

Some clients love Volume.

Some want Hybrid.

Others want a very soft Classic set that simply makes them look like they were born with amazing lashes.

And some natural lashes can safely support things that another person's lashes shouldn't.

That's why education and experience matter.

We look at the client's natural lashes, desired result and lifestyle and choose a design that makes sense for the person sitting in front of us.

If maintaining beautiful natural lashes underneath your extensions is important to you, tell us. It matters to us too.

So… are extensions worse for your lashes than mascara?
Not automatically.

Mascara can be perfectly appropriate when used hygienically and removed carefully. Extensions can also be worn successfully, but they come with their own potential risks and require proper application, appropriate weight, good hygiene and responsible aftercare.

What the evidence does not support is the sweeping statement:
“Lash extensions always ruin your natural lashes.”
And it also doesn't support promising that extensions can never cause damage.

The truth is more useful than either extreme.

A conservative Classic or natural Hybrid set, individually and appropriately applied by a trained professional, is very different from excessively heavy extensions, lashes stuck together, picking extensions off at home or repeatedly applying extensions to lashes that can't support them.

Healthy natural lashes and beautiful extensions don't have to be opposing goals.

At Lash Out Extensions, we believe they should be part of the same goal.

🤍 A little holiday scheduling reminder from Lash Out!

We LOVE seeing so many of you already booking your appointments through Thanksgiving, Christmas and December. 🎄✨ And because some of our schedules book completely solid (and yes, we sometimes have a cancellation list 👀), here’s your friendly reminder:
If you know you want holiday lashes… BOOK. THEM. NOW. 😂

Seriously—take a peek at your calendar and think about work parties, family gatherings, school programs, travel and all those December plans that somehow multiply overnight. If you know when you want your lashes looking their best, now is the time to grab those appointments.

And while we’re talking schedules, here’s a quick reminder about our cancellation policy. Every appointment on our calendar is time reserved specifically for you. If something comes up, we completely understand—life happens! We simply ask for at least 24 hours’ notice whenever possible.

Last-minute cancellations can be especially tricky during the holidays because we may have another client waiting and hoping an appointment opens up.

So our holiday advice is pretty simple:
Pre-book those fills. Double-check that December calendar. Save your stylist’s number. And please don’t wait until December 22nd to text us “Any chance you can squeeze me in?” 😂🎄

We’ll always do our best—but there are only so many lashes we can lash in a day!

Thank you for respecting our stylists’ time, looking out for your fellow Lash Out clients, and keeping our little business so wonderfully busy. We appreciate you! 🤍

Holiday appointments are already being booked—grab yours while you can. ✨

Why Your Next Self-Care Appointment Might Belong in the Middle of the Week:

We tend to treat self-care like something we have to squeeze into whatever time is left.
After work. After errands. After everyone else has been taken care of. Or on an already-packed Saturday when we're trying to accomplish twelve other things at the same time.

But what if your beauty appointment wasn't another item on your to-do list?

What if it was the break in your week?

At Lash Out Extensions, we're big believers in the underrated midweek daytime appointment. Not simply because weekday appointments can be convenient, but because deliberately stepping away from your normal routine can give you something many of us don't get enough of:
Permission to stop for a little while.

Your brain and body need breaks, too
There's actual research behind the importance of taking breaks.

A 2022 systematic review and meta-analysis published in PLOS ONE examined 22 independent study samples involving more than 2,300 participants. Researchers found that even very short breaks during work had statistically significant effects on well-being, including increased vigor and decreased fatigue.

And those were breaks of 10 minutes or less.
A lash appointment obviously isn't the same thing as a workplace micro-break, and we don't want to pretend that it is. But the research reinforces a much broader idea that is easy to forget:
Constantly doing isn't necessarily better than occasionally stopping.

Recovery time matters.

There is something different about stopping in the middle of the day

Think about the way most of us normally experience a weekday.

Alarm. Coffee. Kids. Work. Phone calls. Emails. Appointments. Errands. Dinner. Laundry. Repeat.
Now imagine deliberately interrupting that routine.
You put your phone away. You lie back in a comfortable chair. Your eyes are closed. Nobody needs anything from you. You aren't answering an email while simultaneously thinking about what needs to happen next.

For an hour or two, your only job is to be still.

Relaxation is associated with the parasympathetic side of our autonomic nervous system—the processes that bring the body back toward a resting state after stress. Research into relaxation-oriented practices has examined changes such as slower respiration and reduced heart rate as the body moves away from an activated stress response.

We're certainly not suggesting that a lash appointment is medical treatment or therapy.
But creating quiet time in your day can simply feel good—and there is nothing frivolous about making room for that.

Self-care doesn't have to wait until you're exhausted!

There's a funny thing many of us do with self-care.
We wait until we desperately need it.

We wait until we're burned out, overwhelmed, or staring at ourselves in the mirror thinking, I need to do something for me.

Instead, try putting something enjoyable in the middle of your week before you reach that point.
A Wednesday morning appointment can become something to look forward to on Monday.

A Thursday afternoon appointment can create a little breathing room before the weekend begins.
And if you work from home, have a flexible schedule, work an alternative shift, are retired, have children in school, or simply have some control over your weekday schedule, daytime appointments can be a great way to use that flexibility.

Weekday appointments can feel different from weekend appointments.
Weekends aren't necessarily relaxing.

They're often when we cram in grocery shopping, children's activities, cleaning, social plans, appointments, and everything we couldn't accomplish Monday through Friday.

So instead of sacrificing part of an already busy Saturday, consider making your beauty appointment part of your regular weekday routine.
There can also be something luxurious about walking into the salon at 10:00 on a Wednesday morning when the rest of the world feels like it's rushing around.

You're allowed to take two hours for yourself.
And you leave with one less thing to do every morning.

Lash extensions also have a practical side we love.

You get your downtime during the appointment, but the benefit doesn't end when you get out of the chair.

A thoughtfully designed set of extensions can simplify your morning beauty routine. Whether you prefer an extremely natural Classic set, something soft and textured, or a fuller look, you can wake up with lashes that already look finished.

For many clients, that means one less step before work, school drop-off, errands, or wherever the day takes them.

Self-care doesn't always have to mean adding something to your life.

Sometimes it means making the rest of your life a little easier.

Make your appointment your midweek reset
Maybe we need to stop thinking of weekday appointments as inconvenient times that happen to be available.

For the right person, they may actually be the best appointments of the week.

Come in after school drop-off.
Book during a weekday off.
Use some PTO.
Schedule around your work-from-home day.
Come in before an afternoon shift.
Or decide that taking care of yourself is important enough to put on the calendar.

Lie back.
Close your eyes.
Put your phone away.
Let someone else take care of you for a while.
And when you open your eyes, you happen to have beautiful lashes, too!

That sounds like a pretty good way to spend a Wednesday.
