We all love a tight cuticle application because it looks clean, it looks finished, and it looks perfect, and we have all been tempted to go closer, I have too, and clients often demand it too. The industry has taught us that perfection means getting as close to the skin as possible, and visually it does look the best, there is no denying that, but the best looking is not always the safest. Some clients feel like their nails already look grown out if product is not placed close to the cuticle, and that perception is real even if none of my own clients have ever had that concern. This is the part of the application where you, as a professional nail tech, get to decide where you stand between aesthetics and safety, and that choice is yours to make based on your standards and your comfort level. Product on skin is not perfection, it is exposure. That tiny gap is intentional because it keeps uncured product off the skin and reduces unnecessary contact. The goal is not to chase the cuticle, the goal is controlled application on the nail plate so that product does not touch the skin, because once it touches the skin, even if you wipe away what is visible, reactive chemicals in these products can begin bonding to the proteins in the skin and cannot simply be removed. When did you first learn why the gap matters?
