••Some light musings about jewelweed & foraging••
I honestly don’t know how to start this ramble, because foraging is such a deeply personal practice for me, almost like a prayer. At times it has been exactly that. It’s not something I talk about frequently, because it is so personal to me, but I’d like to share my most recent experience. No matter how prolific a plant may be, sometimes you as a forager don’t find it until you’re ready. For me, that’s just how it works. Some people have seen plants I’ve been looking for all over, but I don’t see it until I’m meant to. And then I can never unsee it. Many things have been like this for me. Jewelweed is a plant I’ve been wanting to work with for the last two summers, but it kept alluding me. I thought I spotted some unflowering stems of jewelweed last summer, and I checked them daily for a week until they bloomed, and they turned out to be something completely different. A few days ago I was on Facebook, and with the new update I don’t typically see my ‘memories,’ but that day the tab popped up and I decided to check it. On that day five years ago, I took the kids to a local Dekalb forest preserve. I scrolled through the pictures, and I had taken a photo of jewelweed, before I even knew what the plant was. It looks like an orchid, so I probably just thought it was beautiful, which I still do, and I took this random picture of it. It feels like a love letter to myself from 5 years ago. I knew exactly which preserve it was, and I went yesterday to look around for it. I went down the path I normally take, but I just didn’t ‘feel’ it there. There were a ton of mosquitoes so I was thinking of turning back, but I decided to walk the tree line for a bit just to check. And then I saw it. And right as I did, a hummingbird flew out of the tree right in front of me, and landed on a branch. Twice. I got to see a damn hummingbird land on a tree. I’ve never seen those crazy critters land. It was amazing, and felt like a gift from someone for finally finding the jewelweed. And long story short, I harvested some tonight and will have anti poison ivy salves and soap available soon lol 😂✨

Powdered Yarrow y’all! The product you always want to have, but never want to have to use! This past weekend my partner cut his finger pretty deep 😩 he’s also a quick bleeder, which makes things worse. Within less than five minutes yarrow did her thing, and the bleeding stopped 🙌 this is something I will never not make.
