Growing up with southern parents had its quirks, for example, I’m a Utah girl with the occasional southern drawl. I know every word to nearly every George straight song, and learned most of my life lessons while driving with the radio on.
The first lesson that sunk in was to “write this down” so that’s what I did
And here’s what I’ve come up with
In Life, you should always have an ace in the hole and check yes or no
That chicken is better fried and Saturday nights should be spent barefoot in blue jeans or under stadium lights
But there also more important things I’ve learned through the speakers
that little ones are always watching you, no seriously, everything you do
And to live like you were dying
that it’s not really just fishing
And that one got me thinking
It got me thinking about all the time you and I spent singing, times I thought we were just driving, just riding… riding that’s right, you taught me to ride
Reminds me of that song “her daddy gave her her first pony, then told her to ride, she climbed high in that saddle fell I don’t how many times, he taught her a lesson she learned maybe a little too well, cowgirls don’t cry, ride baby ride.”
Maybe after all, it wasn’t the music teaching me. It was you, see, you taught me to ride, you taught me to swim, kind of;)
And in the process you taught me to never give up. To ride baby ride.
When I fell you showed me where to stand
When I got bucked off you taught me to get up again
No matter, you always convinced me to try again
You always told me “beauty is pain” and with a little perspective I’ve learned… there is beauty in pain.
Lately, there’s been a lot of pain for us both
Maybe Taylor swift had it right when she told us to never grow up…
There have been ups and downs
And the downs have felt extra down
While you were in Florida I had a moment, I was driving, listening to old country music and feeling nostalgic
I felt scared for you, worried about how everything would go....
