Closing out the year feeling thoughtful and grateful —
not just about Charme, but about the small business community as a whole.

The past few years have asked a lot of us, and seeing fellow businesses navigate change — or close their doors — has been both relatable and hard to watch. It’s a reminder of how much small businesses shape the places we live in.

I’m especially grateful for our clients. So many of you have become friends, and getting to know you, share space with you, and be part of your routines is something I truly value.

We’re still here, moving forward with intention and clarity.

I’m honored to share that I’ve been appointed to the Tacoma Creates Advisory Board.

Tacoma Creates invests in arts, culture, heritage, and creative learning — the things that shape how our kids understand themselves and how our diverse communities stay connected to their roots.

I didn’t grow up in Tacoma. I grew up in a very white area where I was often one of the few Asian kids in school. I was teased for the food I brought, the holidays my family celebrated, and the things I wore — all the parts of my Vietnamese/Southeast Asian identity that felt normal at home but “different” everywhere else. I never really saw my culture represented or celebrated, and that shaped a lot of how I viewed myself.

That’s why I’m so proud to live in Tacoma now. This community wants to learn about different cultures and arts. The curiosity, the care, the openness — it’s here. Sometimes what’s missing is simply visibility, access, or funding to bring these stories forward.

Stepping into this role feels meaningful because I want the next generation — especially kids who look like me — to grow up seeing their culture reflected, honored, and celebrated. I want them to feel a sense of belonging I didn’t always have.

I’m grateful for this opportunity and excited to support the programs, people, and cultural work that make Tacoma such a special place. 🤍

Charme Studio turns 11 next month — and honestly, it’s been a long, uphill climb.

When I started, people thought what I was doing was too different.

Waterless services, non-toxic products, focusing on nail health instead of trends — nobody was really doing that back then.

But I knew it would matter one day. I saw where things were headed, even if it took everyone else a while to catch up.

It took years of explaining, educating, and proving why it mattered — to clients, to staff, even to other pros. I was young, people doubted me, and I had to keep showing up anyway.

Now that I’ve finally taken a second to slow down and look back, I’m honestly a little shocked. What started as just me and an idea has turned into a full salon, a team I’m proud of, and jobs that pay a living wage. We’ve been able to give back, be part of so many community things, and keep growing year after year.

It’s been a lot of work, a lot of hustle, and a lot of heart.

Thank you to everyone who’s believed in Charme Studio along the way — clients, staff, friends, and all the people who understood what we were trying to build, even when it looked a little “different.”

Here’s to 11 years — and everything it took to get here. ✨
