I really have a soft spot for doing hair for older kids and teenagers. It’s not the smartest business decision but I’ll absolutely work with the parent or bend my own rules so I can give a kid still in school some cool hair. My inner child does not live very far from me at any given moment. And I very clearly still remember what it was like to be the only student at Tahlequah Middle School with electric blue hair, and getting pulled into the office to be told they made a new rule that we could only have natural hair colors at school because my hair was too distracting to the other students. Growing up, we weren’t destitute by any means but money wasn’t in excess either. It gave me the gift of growing my creativity and desire to learn, because sometimes if I wanted something I had to learn how to do it or make it myself. My mom did all of my hair cuts growing up, and when I was about 11 I felt she wasn’t keeping up with the times 😂 and I started cutting and coloring my own hair in our family bathroom. It escalated pretty quickly to Manic Panic’s “electric blue”. The little artist in me was chomping at the bit to express myself in any way I could, and the way I looked and dressed was priority number one always, and then the way my room was decorated followed close behind. I’m thankful I had a family who supported my creativity, not everyone has that. I remember having clear thoughts that I didn’t want to look like everyone else, I wanted to look cooler. And it’s a hard thing to have inside you when you’re raised up in rural Oklahoma. It’s a double edged sword. I always want my salon chair to be a reprieve for anyone, but especially young people, who feel different inside and want to look different on the outside too. It’s not a bad thing to express yourself. Who cares if you get a couple school bylaws changed along the way 🤷🏼♀️ Now that I’m all grown up with this skill that I started developing all those years ago in my childhood bathroom, I have a little bit of power to help people express themselves. And it’s really really important for people who have that certain something inside of them. If you know you know.
I unfortunately do not have a picture of the infamous blue hair but I gave myself this messy layered side bang cut. That precious girl.. 🥹

I love color. But nothing feeds my soul like carving shapes into the hair.
