A Costly Typo That Sparked a Fortune

One small typing error changed a woman’s life forever. In the 1950s, Bette Nesmith Graham was working as a secretary at a Texas bank when she made a simple but critical mistake on a document. Back then, typewriters had no easy way to fix errors, and every misstep meant starting an entire page from scratch. One day, after making a visible typo, Bette tried to cover the mistake by painting over it with white tempera paint she used for art projects at home. The idea worked so well that she kept using it to save time at work. What began as a desperate solution to keep her job quickly turned into an invention that would change offices worldwide.

Bette refined her formula at night in her kitchen, mixing batches of what she first called “Mistake Out.” She shared small bottles with other secretaries, who loved how it saved them from retyping entire pages. Word of her simple but brilliant fix spread quickly. In 1956, she renamed it Liquid Paper and began producing it on a larger scale. For years she balanced her day job with this growing side business, but when her boss found out she was running a company on the side, he fired her. Instead of a setback, that firing freed her to focus on her invention full time.

Her timing was perfect. The 1960s office boom, with typewriters in every workplace, made Liquid Paper a must-have tool. By 1979, her company was producing millions of bottles each year. That same year, Bette sold Liquid Paper to Gillette for an astounding $47.5 million plus ongoing royalties, turning a single typo into a life-changing fortune.

Bette Nesmith Graham’s story is a testament to turning mistakes into opportunities. What began as an embarrassing typo became a product that saved secretaries countless hours and revolutionized office work around the world. Her creative thinking, persistence, and belief in her idea transformed failure into success.
