Oh sweet chemicals peels. The ability to dissolve all our wrong doings in a few minutes time. How I yearn for my monthly exfoliation.
Let's talk about peels!
There are a plethora of peels on the market that offer a light sloughing or a Halloween horror movie post experience. What is the best for you?
pH is the name of the game and different states allow for different practitioners to perform the varying levels.
Most states allow an esthetician to perform a 3.0 pH without a medical director. What does pH even mean? Our skin naturally runs a 4.5-5.5 pH so when we introduce something with less pH it causes an exfoliation reaction. The lower the pH the more aggressive the reaction. In the skin world most peels are stabilized so the danger is rare. Some need to be neutralized shortly after application and some allow for the body to slowly neutralize the peel over a few hours.
Here is brief run down of a peels makeup and their benefits.
Glycolic- Good for overall exfoliation and those with acne.(monthly)
Salycilic- Dissolves oil effectively so best for chronic acne (monthly)
Mandelic- Sensitive skin or Rosacea clients(monthly)
Jessner- A cocktail peels that addresses aging and pigmentation( series of 3 or quarterly)
Obagi Blue Peel- Proprietary blend that is great for sun damaged and aging skin.(1-2 times yearly)
There are many other named brand peels out there but most fall into theses categories.
Phenol peels have made a comeback but are most often seen in a cocktail formula. These can be very aggressive peels so please consult a Physician.
If you are not sure about moving forward with a chemical peel then Enzymes are always an option. They are derived from fruits. However, in my experience the pumpkin enzyme has a far greater potency. The pumpkin has the most negative reactive results of the enzyme peels even though this is the time of year they are promoted.
There is so much to know so please contact us if you have any further questions.

Sunscreen Fact vs. Fiction Part 2
So as a continuation of the last post we will talk more about sunscreen from a consumer standpoint.
SPF means Sun Protection Factor. During the standard testing phase they apply different strengths to see how long it takes to burn the skin. In turn this tells the scientists what protection it can offer. It really should be named sun burn factor. It's important to note that when choosing a sunscreen a higher SPF doesn't equate to double or triple the protection. SPF15 to SPF 30 does double the protection of the skin. However, SPF 30 to SPF 50 only protects 3% more. An SPF 50 will protect longer though so you can reapply a little less often. Good rule of thumb for all sunscreen above SPF 30 is to reapply every two hours. The sun and sweat break the product down through this time.
Yes, Fair skin is more susceptible to sun and burns but do not think for a second that dark skin cannot burn! Apply for all skin types to be on the safe side.
Other products that can be used in conjunction with sunscreen would be protective clothing. The tighter the weave the better. Also many clothes are treated with sunscreen into the fibers. Vitamin C(no more than 15%) and Resveratrol. Resveratrol is a natural anti-oxidant, like Vit C, that will help absorb the free radicals that sun produces in your skin. Remember to protect your hands and driving side since they get a ton of sun throughout the day. S much more to know but that is a start. Please reach out of you have any further questions about this topic.

Sunscreen. Facts vs. Fiction Part 1
There is so much info about this subject that I have split this lesson into a two part series.
Let's dig in-
The sun emits three types of harmful UV rays. UVA,UVB,UVC. Historically most sunscreen brands protected from UVB which is the culprit for sunburns. Now we know that long term damage and the aging process is caused by UVA. That is why you may have heard of Broad Spectrum sunscreens. These are necessary because they block those two types of rays UVB(physical blocker) + UVA(chemical blocker). What about UVC rays? Our atmosphere naturally protects us form these rays. However, there are certain parts of the world that UVC is now penetrating the atmosphere which is cause for real concern. Australia is one of these areas.
Physical blockers include :Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide. Think lifeguard with white nose. These are large molecules intended to sit on the surface of the skin.
Chemical Blockers-:Octinoxate, Avobenzone, Oxybenzone, Octocrylene to name a few. These are smaller molecules that go below the surface to protect the melanine and collagen.
Purchasing a Broad Spectrum sunscreen and limiting your sun exposure is key for longevity of skin health.
Next I will talk about application, duration, which SPF % to buy, other forms of protection and a few myths about skin.

Microneedling..what's with it and why do I need it?
Microneedling is an effective esthetic tool that causes small perforations in the skin through a roller method or a pen method that penetrates the skin a varying depths. The depth depends on the tip used or the setting of a pen style unit for the needs of the client. It is widely believed and proven in the esthetic world that if you cause controlled trauma to the skin then the body responds by producing collagen and elastin fibers at a rapid rate. As we age our ability to produce collagen slows. Through these types of treatments an autoimmune response is trigged and the body automatically wants to heal the "wound". In turn more blood flow and collagen growth is developed. Areas that have laxity or scars start to repair and strengthen healthy cells. This treatment is also great for pigmentation, as well, because of the exfoliation that occurs naturally.
All skin types are a candidate. If you have active rosacea, however, the technician will avoid those areas to avoid too much stimulation. Many serums can be included with the treatment for deeper pe*******on such as Vit C, growth serums, hyaluronic acid, peptides, and chemical acids for those with acne. Expect to pay between $150-$250 dependent upon your specific needs. Post expectations are some redness and mild swelling for up to two days. In short, this is a fantastic service for improving texture, laxity, and pigmentation with very little down time.
