I do not talk about this often, but I think it is time.
Growing up, I was called “gorilla legs.” Elementary school. High school.

Kids can be incredibly cruel, and unfortunately, those words stick with you. For a very long time, I felt embarrassed by my body hair. I dreaded shorts, dresses, swimming, and honestly anything that made me feel exposed. My leg hair grew thick, dark, and fast, and at the time, I did not understand why.

What I know now is that there was likely a deeper hormonal story unfolding. What we once called PCOS and now know as PMOS can often show up through excessive hair growth (hirsutism), hormonal changes, and symptoms that make you feel disconnected from your own body.

And if you have ever dealt with unwanted hair growth, then you know this is so much deeper than hair.

It impacts confidence. Femininity. Self esteem. The way you move through the world.

Truthfully, I think this experience shaped who I became.
Because now, as an esthetician who specializes in waxing and skin, I do not see “too much hair.” I see someone who may have spent years feeling uncomfortable in their own skin.

I see someone who just wants relief, because waxing was never just about hair for me. It was confidence. It was feeling feminine. It was finally feeling comfortable in my own body.

So if you have ever felt embarrassed by facial hair, leg hair, chin hair, belly hair, or any of it, please know this - you are not gross. You are not broken. And you are absolutely not alone.

Sometimes our purpose is born from the very thing that once hurt us the most.

For years, we have called it PCOS, or Polycystic O***y Syndrome. But here is the thing. Many people diagnosed with “PCOS” do not even have ovarian cysts.

Which is exactly why the conversation is shifting toward PMOS, or Polymetabolic O***y Syndrome.And honestly? I think this matters. Because this was never just about ovaries. It is the stubborn facial hair. The acne that refuses to leave. The hair thinning. The insulin resistance. The inflammation. The exhaustion. The feeling like your body is doing something you cannot quite explain.

As an esthetician and educator, this is exactly why I study the things I study and why I am so adamant about referrals, especially to endocrinologists because skin often tells a story long before words do. That hormonal acne. The facial hair changes. The pigmentation. The inflammation. Sometimes these are not isolated concerns. Sometimes they are clues.

The beauty industry has historically focused on masking symptoms.

But what if we started asking why?

Why is the skin changing?

Why is the hair growth different?

People deserve providers who care enough to look deeper.
