I asked my AI mentor a question I already know quite a bit about:
"Why do some people struggle to maintain healthy hair?"
Not because I needed the answer.
As educators, we should periodically audit the tools we create. I like checking in to make sure my AI mentor is sharing the same quality of information I intentionally programmed into her, guidance rooted in professional experience, observation, and the lived experiences that have shaped my work behind the chair and in education.
What I appreciated most about her response was that she stayed away from product dependency and kept the focus on understanding hair as a living, responsive fiber.
She highlighted factors such as:
• No understanding one's own hair behavior
• Texture-specific needs
• Need daily practices
• Education gaps
• Lifestyle and environmental influences
• Unrealistic expectations
I would add one more layer: identity and lived experience.
For many people, their relationship with hair is shaped not only by texture and maintenance habits, but also by cultural messaging, family traditions, beauty standards, and past salon experiences. These influences often affect how people care for their hair, what they believe healthy hair should look like, and how confident they feel navigating their own texture.
One of the questions she asks is:
What is my hair consistently telling me?
The shift from searching for a solution to developing awareness is often where real progress begins.
For this audit, I'd say she's on the right track.

What if someone could sit down with me for 10 minutes and borrow nearly three decades of experience?
That question really had my mind spinning.
For years, I've answered the same questions from clients, salon professionals, students, and people navigating their relationship with textured hair.
Questions about:
• Healthy hair care
• Consultations
• Confidence
• The history of textured hair
• Professional growth
• Building a career behind the chair
• Finding the right next step
The challenge wasn't a lack of questions.
The challenge was time.
One person can only answer so many questions in a day.
So I built something different.
Meet Tish — Your Curl & Texture Mentor™.

Tish is an AI-powered extension of my expertise, built from nearly three decades of experience as a professional hairstylist, educator, mentor, and advocate for textured hair.
She was created to help extend education beyond the salon chair and beyond the classroom.
Whether you're a consumer looking for guidance or a salon professional looking to grow, Tish is available 24 hours a day to help you explore questions, gain insight, and take your next step with greater confidence.
Because education shouldn't stop when I leave the salon or education spaces.
Today, she's part of a much larger vision.
A vision where access to professional education, textured hair knowledge, mentorship, and guidance is no longer limited by geography, schedules, or salon hours.
This is one more step toward the future of education.
I'd love for you to meet her and tell me what you think.

I walked away from two of the most profitable parts of my business on purpose. Chemical straightening and weaves.
In the early years, I built a beautiful business installing weaves and styling extensions. The transformations were stunning. Clients loved them and I loved creating them!
But I didn't realize what was happening underneath.
There was this vicious cycle I didn't see at first. Install. Remove. Treat the breakage. Repeat.
I kept treating the damage without questioning myself,
who is causing this?
It wasn't the extensions. It wasn't the tape, the glue or the thread.
It was me.
The moment I stopped offering those services everything shifted. I began to settle into something that felt really good to me. The authority of a healthy textured hair professional.
I started to understand the difference between a transformation that looks good and one that actually serves the client.
That difference has changed the way I move and speak as a professional.
To this day, if I see a beautiful weave or a beautifully executed chemical service, I'll still often be the first person to give a compliment.
I naturally uplift people first. It feels good to share my obsession with beauty.
Education may follow, or it may not. The compliment is still genuine.
I never stopped appreciating the artistry.
I simply became more focused on the long-term outcome.
Have you ever had a moment in your career where you realized you were part of the problem? How did it change you?

Matted hair isn't always about neglect. Sometimes it's about what's happening on the inside. I wrote about the connection between mental health and hair matting because I see it behind the chair more than you'd think. Read it at the link.

This appointment started with my client bravely sharing that she read my blog post, “How Your Mental Health Can Cause Matted Hair.” She has been navigating depression.
We had a powerful conversation about mental health, healing, and taking small steps to reclaim self-care. I couldn’t be more proud of her for prioritizing herself in the midst of everything she’s going through. 💛
She opted for a cut and detangling service only, with plans to get braids the next day. I couldn’t cut much because blunt cutting doesn’t allow Braiders to tuck away short strands.
🔑 While I typically don’t promote braids as a protective style, unless for vacation or other emergencies, here it symbolizes giving herself the space to heal. I fully support that journey. 🙌🏽
This is a reminder that self-care looks different for everyone, and sometimes it’s simply about choosing yourself, even when it’s hard.
Thank you for trusting me🙏🏾
Love you❤️

Of course the natural curl journey is a struggle for those who have not invested in seeing a Natural Curl Specialist. Show no love for your curls and your curls will look unloved. I know that was hard to hear because it was hard for me to say to you.😔
The same goes for when we are not eating right and working out. Naturally we end up loving our bodies a little less and just not loving the way we look.
The moment I started loving on my hair more is the moment I started loving my hair more. Read that again...
Now me and the gym is another conversation. Let’s focus on your hair for now! 🥴
Share this with a friend who needs a little curl care encouragement. 🥰
