What’s the earliest hair appointment you’ve ever booked?

5 AM appointments sound crazy…

Until you realize you can skip the after-work traffic, avoid spending your entire Saturday in a salon chair, and head straight to the gym, home, or wherever your day takes you.

My client started her day with a fresh wash, retwist, and style before most people even hit snooze.

Sometimes convenience is the real luxury. ✨

🚨 LOC’D MAMAS, DON’T PANIC.

If you’ve recently had a baby and noticed your locs looking thinner around your hairline, temples, or crown, you’re not alone.

What you’re experiencing may be postpartum alopecia, also known as postpartum hair shedding.

During pregnancy, high estrogen levels keep many hairs in the growth phase longer than usual. That’s why many women notice their hair feels thicker and fuller while pregnant.

After delivery, estrogen levels drop rapidly.

As a result, many of those hairs enter the shedding phase at the same time.

This usually begins about 2 to 5 months after giving birth and can continue for several months.

For women with locs, this can be especially alarming because:

• Your locs may suddenly feel thinner.
• The scalp may become more visible.
• Edges and temples may appear sparse.
• Retwists may not look as full as they once did.

Here’s the part many people don’t know:

👉 In most cases, postpartum hair loss is temporary.

Many women begin seeing regrowth within 6 to 12 months postpartum, although full density can take longer depending on genetics, nutrition, stress levels, hormones, and overall health.

Can it be prevented?

Unfortunately, there is no guaranteed way to stop postpartum shedding because it is driven by hormonal changes.

However, some things may support healthy regrowth:

✔ Adequate protein intake
✔ Iron and vitamin level assessment if recommended by your healthcare provider
✔ Stress management
✔ Gentle loc maintenance
✔ Avoiding excessive tension from styles
✔ Scalp care and overall health

What usually DOESN’T help:

❌ Tight styles to “hide” thinning
❌ Over-retwisting
❌ Products claiming to completely stop hormonal shedding

If your shedding is severe, continues beyond a year postpartum, or you’re noticing bald patches, it’s important to consult a dermatologist or healthcare provider to rule out other causes.
