This week takes me in to my 15th year of doing hair. 15 years of mixing up bowls of color & lightener, curating toners for any & every blonde, guessing with my fingers crossed in hopes that something out of my comfort zone would turn out okay, hoping that new clients liked their hair enough to come back, learning about hundreds of people, building relationships & friendships that would transfer outside of the salon, sore feet at the end of the day, moving from salon to salon until I finally found the perfect spot, posting on social media in hopes of rebuilding a client base after moving away from my home town, trying to juggle a personal life & owning my own business, trying to remember to drink water & take 30 seconds to p*e & maybe shove some food in my mouth between clients, feeling the weight of my clients’ sorrow/sadness/secrets that they’ve shared (because I am nothing if not an empath) while also putting on a happy face even on my own, personal saddest days. 15 years of laughter about the big & small things, hoping that I had enough foils or developer or that certain color that I needed for that one client with the extra thick hair that one day, ruined clothing from being messy bessy, sweet gifts from the most thoughtful clients, surprise visits from others, flutters of anxiety butterflies when I had someone new, and immense pride in myself year after year that I still keep going. I remember my very first day in a salon right out of school (heels, a very tight/short leopard print dress, hot pink apron) and desperately wanting my business to grow. I went straight in to booth rental; I knew I didn’t want a boss, and I thought I already knew everything. I ran Groupons, I offered half off services to first-time clients, I put my business cards everywhere I could, and I waited tables 3 nights a week to cover my bills. My first year out of hair school I made less than $10k doing hair. It was a grind, it was a constant hustle, it was a lot of drama, a lot of heartache, a lot of trial and error, and a lot of maturing that brought me to where I am now. I am blessed beyond measure for the loyalty & kindness from all of you. Cheers to 15 years & not giving up 🍾✨
