Remember last year when I posted about my mom playing her favorite game—Garden Roulette—and I had to come to the rescue? 😂🌱

Well… I think she decided to play another round this year. 😅

If gardening were a game of roulette, Mom aka Gwendolyn Washington-Brown wasn’t afraid to take a few chances. This season, those calculated risks came with a big payout! Her garden is absolutely beautiful—lush, thriving, and already producing an amazing harvest. 🍅🥒🌿

To be fair, she stacked the odds in her favor. She started most of her plants from seed, followed many of my companion planting (a.k.a. Good Neighbor) recommendations, and has faithfully cared for her garden all season.

As a gardening coach, I love seeing gardeners learn, grow in confidence, and enjoy the fruit of their labor. Mom, I’m so proud of you! Your garden is proof that preparation, patience, and consistent care can lead to a beautiful harvest. 💚🌱

Sow generously. Grow faithfully. Reap abundantly.

🌱☀️ Hello, June! Northwest Ohio gardeners—it’s go time!

Longer days, warmer soil, and garden dreams are turning into harvests. June is all about planting heat-loving crops, direct sowing summer favorites, and setting your garden up for success through the hottest months ahead.

This month we’re focusing on:
🌿 Planting warm-season crops
🌻 Direct sowing flowers and veggies
💧 Deep watering and mulching
🪴 Supporting growing plants
🐞 Staying ahead of weeds and pests

Remember: every seed planted is an act of faith. Keep showing up, keep sowing, and trust God for the growth. ❤️

🌿 Herb of the Week: Mullein 🌿

Last year, after learning about its traditional herbal uses, I purchased a mullein plant and placed it in a pot… but something kept eating it before I could really enjoy it. 😩

Fast forward to this year, and look what I discovered growing naturally right in front of my barn! Nature has a funny way of giving things back when the timing is right. 🌱✨

Mullein is known for its soft velvety leaves and long history in herbal traditions, especially regarding respiratory wellness. Many people have commonly used it in teas, tinctures, and infused oils for generations.

One thing I love about gardening and herbs is how they remind us that God’s creation is resilient, abundant, and often shows up exactly where it’s needed. 💚 I think it’s amazing how many beneficial plants grow naturally around us once we start paying attention.

⚠️ FYI…Sharing plant information only — I am not a doctor, this is not medical advice, and you should consult your physician before using any medicinal herbs.

What’s one plant, herb, or “weed” you used to overlook but later discovered had a purpose or benefit? 🌿👀

May in Northwest Ohio isn’t always warm and welcoming… and this week is proof 🌱❄️

With temps dipping into the 30s and 40s, this is your reminder…
just because it’s May doesn’t mean it’s time for everything to go in the ground.

Here’s how to garden wisely right now in Zone 6B:

🌿 Plant with purpose
Stick with your cool-season crops
Think: kale, lettuce, spinach, peas, onions

🌱 Direct sow with confidence
Carrots, radishes, beets, and greens can handle this weather

🌡️ Protect what you’ve planted
Row covers are your best friend right now
Frost is still showing up uninvited

🪴 Prepare, don’t rush
Build your soil
Map your beds
Get ready for warm-season planting later this month

This season isn’t about rushing…
It’s about being rooted, prepared, and patient

Because faithful gardening starts with vision, not pressure 💚

Stay ready… your warm days are coming!

My first herb harvest of the year was not what most people would expect.

It was Stinging Nettle.

I am not using it for medicinal purposes, but I am putting it to work in the garden as a homemade fertilizer. I love how the garden can take something unexpected and still make it useful.

Stinging Nettle has a long history in herbal traditions, but this harvest is all about feeding the soil and supporting new growth in the garden.

Sometimes the first harvest is not about what is pretty or familiar. Sometimes it is about paying attention to what the season is offering you.

The blog is up now, sharing more about stinging nettle, its traditional uses, important cautions, and how I am using it in the garden this season.

Have you ever turned an unexpected plant into something useful in your garden?

I planted asparagus for the first time last summer, so seeing these little spears push through the soil brought me so much joy. There is something special about watching what was planted in faith finally begin to rise. Moments like this remind me that growth is happening, even before the garden is in full bloom.

This little sprout is giving me fresh hope and plenty of excitement for all that is to come this gardening season.

What is popping up in your garden right now, or what are you most excited to grow this season? Share in the comments.
