Post-op lymphatic drainage does NOT have to hurt to be effective. 💜

At Light Bodies Integrative Massage, we use slow, gentle, evidence-informed lymphatic techniques designed to support the body’s natural lymphatic function, encourage fluid movement, and help manage swelling after surgery.

There is no forcing the fluid.
No digging into tender tissue.
No aggressive pressure.
And pain is not an indication that the treatment is “working.”

Manual Lymphatic Drainage uses light, rhythmic, intentional movements to work with the superficial lymphatic system—not against your healing body.

In fact, many of my post-op clients fall asleep on the table. 😴

Recovery can make quality sleep difficult. You may be wearing compression, dealing with swelling and tenderness, or sleeping in unfamiliar and uncomfortable positions to protect your surgical areas. Sometimes your lymphatic session becomes one of the few moments when your nervous system can truly settle.

Post-operative care should support healing—not become another thing your body has to recover from.

✨ Gentle can be effective.
✨ Lymphatic work should be intentional.
✨ Your healing tissues deserve respect.

Preparing for surgery or already in recovery? Don’t wait until swelling and discomfort become overwhelming to plan your post-op care.

⚠️ POST-OP RED FLAGS MATTER.

This reel shows an example of ni**le tissue necrosis following breast surgery—a serious surgical complication that requires evaluation and management by the client’s surgeon/medical team.

Post-operative care is about so much more than “getting a lymphatic massage.”

A properly trained, licensed post-operative massage professional should understand normal stages of healing, know when something does not look right, recognize potential complications, and—most importantly—know when NOT to massage and when to immediately refer the client back to their surgeon.

Necrotic or otherwise compromised tissue is not something to massage, manipulate, drain, or attempt to treat within massage therapy.

Your post-op provider should be able to recognize red flags such as:
• Significant or worsening discoloration
• Increasing redness, warmth or swelling
• Drainage, odor or changes to an incision
• Skin that appears dusky, gray, purple or black
• Fever or other signs of infection
• Unexpected changes in healing

Post-operative bodywork can be incredibly supportive when performed appropriately—but scope of practice, clinical judgment, proper training and communication with the surgical team matter.

Choose your post-op care provider carefully. Ask about their license, lymphatic training, post-surgical education and experience.

✨ Your recovery deserves qualified hands.

Shared for educational purposes. Post-operative massage does not diagnose or treat necrosis or replace medical/surgical care.

POV: When your most challenging client is also your daughter 😂💆‍♀️

All jokes aside, there’s actually something important behind this reel. Sometimes a client comes to the table feeling apprehensive, overwhelmed, overstimulated, or simply having a hard time regulating their emotions — and how we respond as therapists matters.

A few things I always try to remember:

✨ Slow down your voice and your movements.
✨ Stay calm and grounded — your energy can help create a sense of safety.
✨ Check in often instead of assuming something feels good.
✨ If a technique is uncomfortable, adjust it. The goal isn’t to push through discomfort.
✨ Keep inviting feedback: pressure, positioning, temperature, technique — all of it.
✨ Most importantly, work with your client, not just on them.

Massage is more than knowing anatomy and techniques. It’s also knowing how to listen, adapt, communicate, and meet the person on your table where they are that day.

And sometimes… they really do test all of those skills. 😂😂

When swelling turns into HARDNESS, pulling & puckering after J-Plasma… it’s time to pay attention. 👀

This before & after shows the progress we achieved with careful, progressive post-operative fibrosis and superficial fascia work. ✨

After J-Plasma/Renuvion, some tissue contraction is expected—it’s part of what creates the skin-tightening effect. But during healing, some clients can develop areas that feel hard, dense, tethered or uneven, with skin that may appear puckered, wrinkled or “shriveled.”

Our goal is NOT to aggressively “break up” the tissue or undo the tightening effect of J-Plasma.

Instead, once the client is appropriately healed and cleared for treatment, we work progressively to:

✨ Improve superficial fascial mobility
✨ Address areas of restriction and tethering
✨ Support lymphatic flow & lingering edema
✨ Soften areas of postoperative induration
✨ Encourage smoother movement between the skin and underlying tissues
✨ Improve the overall appearance and feel of the treated area

Timing and technique matter. Fibrosis work should be progressive—not painful or overly aggressive simply because the tissue feels hard.

These results demonstrate why post-op care isn’t just about lymphatic drainage. As healing progresses, the treatment needs to progress with it. 💜

Every surgical recovery is different, and concerning or unusual changes should always be evaluated by the treating surgeon.
