Showering right before a spray tan causes the tanning solution to streak, fade unevenly, or not develop as dark. For the best possible glow, skip the pre-tan shower and keep these key prep rules in mind:
🍒 Hot water and steam open your pores. The tanning solution can settle into these open pores, leaving you with tiny, dark, uneven spots.
🍒Water and soaps disrupt the natural pH levels of your skin, which can prevent the tanning solution from adhering and developing evenly.
🍒Spray tans absorb into the top layer of your skin. Lingering moisture from a recent shower traps the solution and stops it from sinking in properly.
🍒Even mild soaps leave a microscopic film on your skin that acts as a barrier, causing the tan to look blotchy or fade in patches.
Showering 8 to 24 hours before your spray tan allows your skin’s natural oils and pH levels to rebalance. This window ensures your pores are closed and fully recovered from hot water or shaving, preventing the tanning solution from absorbing unevenly and leaving you with a patchy, dotted, or streaky color.

What you need to know about bodies of water & spray tans:
•Spray tans (using DHA) only affect the very outermost layer of your skin (the stratum corneum). When you soak in a pool, bath, lake, or the ocean, your skin cells absorb water and swell. This loosens the attachments holding those dead, tanned skin cells together, causing them to flake off much faster than usual.
• While spray tans technically cannot be sweat proof or water proof, our “sweat proof” tan extends the life of your tan by vastly improving how the tanning molecules attach to your skin during application. This formula delivers the spray tan solution deeper into the stratum corneum for a more balanced application that prevents fading and hot spots around day 5 of the tan.
• Following skin prep & aftercare will further help avoid patchy and streaky spray tans around day 5 of the tan.
• We always recommend a barrier lotion of sorts when submerging your spray tan skin under water for extended periods of time. A creamy SPF or rich body lotion will do the trick! (We prefer SPF because who wants sun damage!?)
