Charles' Barber & Style Shop
We are an old fashioned barbershop,
striving to give our patrons great service!

It is with sadness and a very heavy heart that I must tell the community that we have closed permanently.
I grew up in this barbershop. That shoeshine chair was my first paying job. It was also my brother's. We swept hair, made change, folded towels and helped where we could until we could really help.
In 2004, my dad gave me an apprenticeship. He gave many barbers the same opportunity, including my own daughter. He helped young people to build a career. Many of them naturally left us and dad was proud of their accomplishments. But our clients didn't leave.
No. Our clients turned friends and family would bring their families back to us for services...for generations.
There was an honor and a privilege in that for my father that words can not convey and he loved doing this job for these folks.
Over the years, I watched him miss our ball games, cheer competitions, spelling bees or even more important things in our lives, to be there, at the shop, with his clients.
I asked him once as a young girl, if he was the boss why didn't he take the time to be with us at school, sports, etc. He looked me right in the eyes and said, "I don't work for myself. I work for those folks who keep coming back. I work for you and your brother."
See, he loved us all in his own way.
He loved his shop, its people and his family.
If you ever sat in my dad's chair, you probably heard a great joke or two and a little bit of his testimony.
Lucky you.
My father never really bragged on himself. So please, let me, one last time...
Charlie was over 65 years in the industry. An apprentice barber, he worked his own way through college at Young Harris before coming to Atlanta out of his mountain home in the early '60's. He worked at the bus station, back when the greyhound still offered a barbershop.
During this time he bought his first home, attended some law school and got his first of many flying lessons and started working for Mr Taylor of Taylor's Barbershop (Lavista/where the blue ribbon grille was).
In 1972, Charlie would open his own establishment...we were off to the races then!
As a kid, I can remember the music playing, the chairs full and the laughter.
The laughter never ended. And business grew.
The price of a hair cut increased only by $12 over the course of 53 years.
He once told me that "anymore than $8/hot lather shave and a man would do it himself". We eventually got the price up. He believed in value, quality and fairness.
In 1993, when the hardware store expanded their store, dad was moved just down the sidewalk.
The Smiths were and have always been incredible landlords and friends. (Thank you, Smith Family, for years of relationship that served more than ourselves).
It was then that my dad went over to Alabama and bought a barbershop that was over 100 years old.
Moving down the sidewalk presented dad with an opportunity to remodel his shop. Many of the antiques you all sat on came from that endeavor.
The shop was more than its time or antiques, it was a place where you could still meet your neighbors while getting a good cut for a great price. Time stopped when you swung open the door. Maybe for some of us, it even rolled back for about 30 mins, as the "Mayberry feel" of the place comforted our rushed hearts. Over fifty-three years, we made some great family and friends. I can say with all certainty that my father loved and appreciated every single person who came in his establishment. Thank you for making his life better. He loved you for it.
We were a three generational shop. My dad was most proud of that achievement. He beamed with pride and often bragged on his grandchild who learned at his right hand. Occasionally, we spoke of that moment of pride when you see your child do something that you taught them, very well. He'd catch my eye and wink.
Thank you for relationship and allowing us to serve you. A man or woman and their barber is a relationship all its own. It gets personal. Thank you for allowing us to be that for you.
All that said, Charlie was the barbershop. I can not and am not inclined to do it without him. The shop was more home than our homes were and it's a most unsettling feeling to be there alone. I'll take the memories and bid you farewell. Thank you, again, for many many years of goodness!
If there was one thing my father would say to leave you with, it would be this:
"We love because we were first loved."
"If you haven't had a haircut today, you need one." &
"God bless you."
~Angie, Charlie's (very proud) daughter
To our loyal customers, friends, and community:
It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of our beloved owner—and my father—last week. As we navigate this difficult time and handle the matters of his estate, the barbershop will be temporarily closed.
We are uncertain about the future of the shop, but one thing is certain: we are incredibly grateful for the love, support, and patience you’ve shown us over the years and especially now.
Thank you for being a part of our extended family. We’ll keep you updated as we know more.
With gratitude,
Angie

These are the arrangements for Charles. We will hold a memorial in Tucker at a later date for this who would like to attend that can't make this journey to lay him to rest. We want to honor those he served by providing a time for the folks he served in Tucker and the surrounding area. Thank you for all of the love and stories, condolences and prayers.

With Deep Sadness, We Announce the Passing of Charles Mason
It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our beloved Charles Mason, who left us peacefully this morning, June 6.
Charles was more than just the owner of Charles Barbershop — he was a fixture in the Tucker, Georgia community for over 50 years. With his steady hands, warm heart, and sharp clippers, he helped generations of families look their best, while always making them feel at home.
We are grateful for the love and loyalty so many of you have shown him over the years. At this time, arrangements are still being made, but we do plan to hold a memorial service in Tucker to honor and celebrate his incredible life and legacy.
Thank you for keeping our family in your thoughts during this time. We’ll share more details as they become available.

Between the snow/ice and the water clean up at the shop, we've been closed sporadically. We apologize.
This past week, we lost a family member who helped us build the shop. She helped raise kids so Charles could work. She did concession stand duty at Fitzgerald field so we could play sports and Charlie could work. She and her husband, Charles Bowen, had the only Kawasaki dealership in Decatur and they were long time residents of our beloved city of Tucker. Her profile even says she works with us.
Her name was Patricia...sister & aunt.
We will attend her funeral Tuesday. We will be closed to attend this gathering with family and to grieve along side them the way they have lived life along side us.
We will return Wednesday, the 19th.
