She was born in Atlanta, Texas to sharecroppers on January 26, 1892. Her parents were of African American and Native American descent. Coleman moved to France to attend flight school after facing discrimination in the United States. On June 15, 1921, she became the first African American woman to earn a pilot's license. She returned to the United States and became a stunt pilot and in 1926 during an aerial show rehearsal she died.

Garrett Morgan (March 4, 1877 – July 27, 1963) was an African American inventor, businessman, and community leader born in Claysville, Kentucky. The son of formerly enslaved parents, Morgan displayed an early talent for mechanical innovation, which led him to develop several groundbreaking inventions that improved public safety and everyday life.

Morgan is best known for inventing the three-position traffic signal, a precursor to modern traffic lights, which greatly improved road safety by introducing the yellow caution light. His invention was patented in 1923 and later sold to General Electric. Additionally, he created the safety hood and smoke protector, an early version of the gas mask, which saved many lives, including during a 1916 tunnel explosion rescue in Cleveland.

Beyond his inventions, Morgan was a successful entrepreneur who founded the Cleveland Call newspaper and was a strong advocate for African American rights and economic empowerment. His contributions to Black and American culture extended beyond innovation—he broke racial barriers in business and fought for equality, leaving a lasting impact on both technology and civil rights.
