I got the news just this morning that my good friend and business associate Linda Layman has passed away. After a successful run as a model herself, Linda (Linda Hull was her real name) started what was without question the top modeling agency in the area. If you looked in the yellow pages back in the 80's there were many listings for modeling agencies, but most were not much more than charm schools. The Linda Layman Agency was a bona fide working agency providing steady employment, training and guidance for a generation of models. Linda was a force to be reckoned in her prime, keeping track of a litany of talent and placing them in jobs with the top businesses. She built a stellar reputation by providing brutally honest counseling to those seeking a future in the business. Several of her charges reached the highest levels of the modeling world.
In her retirement I got to see a softer side of her as she continued to trust me with her hair for the rest of her life. She enjoyed her family and friends, her church and keeping fit at the gym.

I owe a big debt of gratitude to her for her for supporting my career by utilizing me as a consultant at her agency for over 25 years and for sending me multitudes of referrals throughout the years. To this day I can trace a large portion of my clients back to a Linda Layman referral. I've told the story of the beginning of our business relationship before but here it is again for those who may have missed it.

Joanie and I started Andoe Salon in 1990 and in those early days we were doing okay. Our clientele had loyally followed us from our previous jobs, and we had built up a nice business by the time our youngest child was born in 1994. In those years before social media the concept of an influencer had not been established but the closest thing I had was a beautiful lady who had married a successful local video producer after a significant career as a model herself including a feature in the Italian edition of Pl***oy magazine. This lady had found her way to my chair due to my working relationship with her husband. Dozens of her friends and neighbors followed her advice and used Andoe Salon for their hair care needs. She was my most vocal and visible supporter.
Joanie had decided to go on a girlfriend's ski trip and had carefully planned how her parents could help me manage our kids in her absence. Those plans however were soon to be blown up. Saying goodbye in the predawn hours to Joanie and her friends I headed back to sleep looking to rest up for a busy day coordinating three kids aged 9, 4 and 1. I woke up to the oldest complaining about not feeling well and within a short time a full blown stomach bug had taken hold. He started throwing up and stopped a few hours later only to get vomit from his little sister a few hours later. It was a busy day trying to manage a couple of sick kids and a baby. I told my in-laws they better stay away. As the day wound down the older kids symptoms subsided and I was grateful that the baby had avoided the bug. I was sound asleep, exhausted from the events of the day when I was woken up by the baby who was not very happy. You probably guessed by now what was inevitable, the baby was sick too but being a baby couldn't quite let me know when he needed to puke and proceeded to throw up all over the couch.

So, after cleaning up the baby and stripping the covers off the sofa I sat there on the bare foam rubber cushions holding the sick baby as I watched the Tulsa cable preview channel scroll by in the middle of the night. The cable company sold ads on the preview guide and as I sat there an ad popped up for this new stylist in town who had come into town from L.A. making all kinds of noise and hiring a host of the best hairdressers in town. I had even turned down an invitation to join his crew. Anyway, aimlessly watching this commercial I was horrified to see that beautiful client of mine in his chair with him describing her new haircut. As you can imagine sitting there in that situation was the lowest of low points but as fate would have it, it turned into a very fortunate series of events....

It turns out that Linda Layman had taken some of her best models to appear on a local morning news show earlier that month to show off some current fashions. Also appearing on the show that day was that noisy stylist who had wrangled a spot for himself showing off his handy work. Noticing this beautiful lady (my influencer) there in the studio he boldly offered her a free haircut there on set if she would allow him to cut her hair on the air. My client felt guilty for cheating on me but free was free and knew she would come back to me and apologize. Thinking she was done with it she went on about her business. But what she didn't realize is that this guy had recorded that segment and created and placed the advertisement on Tulsa Cable without the model's permission and more importantly Linda Layman's permission. He was also the current hair consultant for Linda. In short order she sent him a cease and desist on the ad and fired him on the spot. My client feeling terrible for what had happened went to Linda knowing she would be needing a new hair consultant recommended me. Not knowing any of this I was shocked one day to get a call from Linda, who I had never met but whose reputation proceeded her, she wanted a haircut. She came in, we had a nice visit, and she left with a good cut. Weeks went by and I get a second call from Linda, and she states that she's coming back in for a cut and this time if she likes it, she'll hire me as her new hair consultant. Well, that second visit went as well as the first and by that afternoon I was getting calls from referrals from the Linda Layman agency.

From the lowest low emerged a career defining opportunity. I will forever be grateful for her support and friendship. I will miss her terribly and wish peace upon her family.
