The Navy just announced it will discharge sailors who can't shave clean within a year, even if a doctor says it's medically impossible, and this overwhelmingly targets Black service members. Pseudofolliculitis barbae, the condition behind most of these waivers, affects roughly 60 percent of Black men according to the American Osteopathic College of Dermatology. A neutral grooming rule that mostly pushes out one race isn't neutral.

This didn't come out of nowhere. Hegseth ordered the crackdown last September, fitting a pattern seen all year: renaming bases once changed to honor Black and minority troops, removing plaques and unit histories tied to diversity efforts, and forcing out senior officers he's tied to DEI. Each move gets defended as readiness. Together they read differently.

That crusade goes well beyond grooming. The New York Times found Hegseth has blocked at least 40 senior officer promotions this year, about half of them women or minorities, often with no explanation given. He pulled two Black and two female Army colonels off a promotion list after Army leaders refused to do it themselves, and fired Gen. Charles Q. Brown Jr., only the second Black Joint Chiefs chairman, early in his tenure. Nineteen or more generals and admirals have been sidelined total.

Hegseth calls all of this rooting out "wokeness" and insists race and gender never factor in. But when you add up the shaving policy, the blocked promotions, and the firings, the pattern speaks for itself, whatever the official explanation is.
