This is why I never chase one-dimensional color.

To me, a luxe brunette is rich without feeling heavy, dimensional without looking stripey, and soft from every angle.

It’s the little details that separate a good color from a great one, and that’s what I obsess over 👏🏼

Kinda chic is a whole personality at this point.

Pick your favorite slide and tell me which “kinda chic” you’re claiming today. 🫶🏼

Work Fits lately 🖤

When people hear “extensions,” they picture the mermaid, ponytails down to your ankles, having to move your hair just to go to the bathroom kind of length and drama.

But for a lot of my clients, that’s not the goal at all…

Sometimes it’s filling in the ends.
Adding fullness where it’s missing.
Creating a shape your natural hair can’t quite achieve on its own.
Or they can simply make your everyday hair feel like its best version.

That’s the beauty of a customized extension install. It’s never about making everyone look the same, it’s about creating the hair that’s right for YOU.

This feels like one of those posts where I don’t want to just say “” GO VOTE FOR ME!”” because the truth is… being here already means so much to me.

I’ve spent so many years behind the chair just trying to grow. Learning, creating, messing up, trying again, pushing myself outside of my comfort zone… my work has became such a huge part of who I am over the past 14 years…. Literally half my life almost.

And then there’s Salon Two Zero Nine.

What started as a dream has grown into a place filled with some of the most amazing people I know. A place I’ve poured so much of myself into for the last 10 years. So seeing our salon in the Top 100 for Salon Decor… for the fourth year in a row I believe… alongside two of my own entries for the second year in a row… I don’t really have the words for what that feels like.

I know there are SO many insanely talented artists and beautiful salons in these categories. I don’t take for granted for one second that my work is sitting beside theirs. That feels unreal.

So yes… I would absolutely LOVE your vote. But more than anything… thank you for being the people who have supported me, sat in my chair, worked alongside me, shaped me as a salon owner and stylist, shared my work, cheered for the salon and believed in the things I create.

Sometimes when you’re in the middle of building something… for so long…. you forget to look around and realize how far it’s actually come.

If you’d like to vote… I’m nominated in THREE categories:

✨ Warm Balayage — Megan King | Extension Specialist | Central Valley Hair Stylist
✨ Color Transformation — Megan King | Extension Specialist | Central Valley Hair Stylist
✨ Salon Decor — TURLOCK SALON + HAIR EXTENSIONS + BOUTIQUE

You’ll create a free account, search the category + Instagram handle, and tap the 🖤 on the entry. That’s it!

Whether we make it any further or not…. Top 100 x3 is something I’m really proud of.

Thank you for being part of it. Truly.🖤

Is salon retail… dead? 👀

Because I’m genuinely asking.

If retail isn’t hitting like it used to… what are we pivoting to?

Do we stop trying to compete with Amazon and Sephora?
Do we carry less but make it more exclusive?
Do we shift that energy into memberships, affiliate links… something else entirely?

I don’t think clients stopped spending money on great brands.
I think the way they spend it changed and we just aren’t their go to plug now unfortunately. 😢

Salon owners + stylists: what are you seeing behind the chair? Is retail dead… or does it just need a new strategy? 👇🏼

The fastest way to age yourself in this industry isn’t your years behind the chair… it’s thinking you’re above learning from the next generation.

I’ve seen way too many stylists roll their eyes at younger artists for making TikToks, filming reels, celebrating their wins, prioritizing social media, investing in education, buying nice products or stocking new color lines JUST to try them, or simply showing up differently than we did years ago. OR… here’s a BIG one… charging more than you.

Why?

Why are we making fun of people for marketing themselves? For being excited? For building a business that works in today’s world? For betting on themselves?

Experience is valuable. But experience without humility is gross.

Being behind the chair for 20 years doesn’t automatically make someone better than the stylist who’s been doing hair for 3. It means you’ve had different experiences. That’s it.

The goal shouldn’t be to make the next generation smaller so we feel bigger.

If someone is putting themselves out there, cheering themselves on, investing in their business, or trying something new… encourage them. CHEER THEM ON TOO… and maybe even let your ego down a bit to LEARN from them. The industry has enough competition. We don’t need to create more by tearing each other down.

Let’s be the stylists who leave the door open instead of guarding it.

Because confidence isn’t threatened by someone else’s success. (Please ignore the weird elevator music. It was accident 😂)
