How Daylight Saving Time Impacts Your Health.

How Daylight Saving Time Impacts Your Health.
Gaining an extra hour of daylight is a sure sign that spring is on its way and warmer months are ahead! But "springing forward" can also impact your health in surprising ways.

Moving the clocks ahead can throw off your circadian rhythm—your body's natural 24 hour cycle that aligns with daylight hours and nighttime hours. This change can contribute to getting less sleep than you need. Lack of sleep in the days after a time change can lead to grogginess and reduced mental sharpness.

Make sure to add extra reminders to take your medications on time after a time change, such as leaving a note for yourself or setting a reminder notification in your smartphone. One common concern is when to take your medications the day after a time change. In general, it is recommended to keep your medications on the same schedule. So, if you take your medication at 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. on the Saturday before the time change, take your medications at 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. on the Sunday after the time change.

We May Finally Know How The First Cells on Earth Formed

The story of how life started on Earth is one that scientists are eager to learn. Researchers may have uncovered an important detail in the plot of chapter one: an explanation of how bubbles of fat came to form the membranes of the very first cells.

A key part of the new findings, made by a team from The Scripps Research Institute in California, is that a chemical process called phosphorylation may have happened earlier than previously thought.

This process adds groups of atoms that include phosphorus to a molecule, bringing extra functions with it – functions that can turn spherical collections of fats called protocells into more advanced versions of themselves, able to be more versatile, stable, and chemically active.

These protocells are widely thought to have been vital building blocks for biochemistry more than 3.5 billion years ago, perhaps emerging from hot springs under the ocean along the way to the evolution of more complex biological structures.

While some alternative therapies can help, many don't work. Research shows that up to 30% of people with cancer have tried a so-called "cure" that doesn't have any benefits. They can be a waste of time and money. Even worse, some of these "remedies" are dangerous to your health and may affect how well other cancer treatments work.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Friday that it would wind down much of its remaining guidance specifically targeted at COVID-19, including an official end to a pandemic-era plea for Americans to stay home for five days after testing positive.

The agency cited improvements in the rates of hospitalizations and deaths inflicted by the virus this past season for the change in its recommendations.

"COVID-19 remains an important public health threat, but it is no longer the emergency that it once was, and its health impacts increasingly resemble those of other respiratory viral illnesses," the agency said Friday in a report justifying its decision.

CDC shortens 5-day COVID isolation, updates guidance on masks and testing in new 2024 recommendations The new recommendations apply to COVID-19 and other viruses, like flu and RSV.

Radon Gas: What Is It, Detection & Complications 02/01/2024

What is radon?
Radon is a colorless, odorless, radioactive gas. If a person is exposed to high levels over time, it can cause lung cancer.

Radon gas forms naturally when radioactive metal (radium, thorium or uranium) breaks down in rocks, soil or groundwater. It evaporates and disappears outdoors, so levels outside are low. Indoors, however, radon gas can enter buildings through their foundations and become trapped. People may breathe in radon gas in their homes, school, workplaces and other indoor places.

How does radon gas affect my body?
Breathing in high levels of radon over time can increase your risk of developing lung cancer. Cigarette smoking is the number one cause of lung cancer, and radon exposure is estimated to be the second leading cause. About 20,000 people in the United States die from radon-related lung cancer every year.

People who smoke ci******es and breathe in radon have an even higher chance of developing lung cancer.

6 Common Nutrient Deficiencies and How to Combat Them — SEAM 01/28/2024

6 Common Nutrient Deficiencies and How to Combat Them.If you frequently experience bouts of fatigue, pain, anxiety, brain fog, insomnia, irregular heartbeat, hair loss, or infections, you are not alone.
1. VITAMIN D
Vitamin D is among the most common nutrient deficiencies in our modern age. From spending more time indoors away from sunlight to not getting enough through our diets, it’s no wonder Vitamin D deficiency is on the rise.

2. CALCIUM
As the most abundant mineral in the human body, calcium is involved in a number of processes, including bone formation, muscle function, blood vessel contraction, nerve transmission, and hormone secretion.

3. IRON
Iron is a mineral that is essential for physical growth, cellular function, neurological development, muscle metabolism, and even the synthesis of certain hormones

4. VITAMIN B12
Similar to iron deficiency, a deficiency in vitamin B12 can also affect the health of your red blood cells—resulting in anemia. Left untreated, low B12 levels can even impair normal brain and nerve function.

5. SELENIUM
Selenium is a lesser-known mineral that is critical for reproduction, DNA synthesis, immune support, protection from oxidative damage, and thyroid hormone metabolism. In fact, people who don’t get enough selenium in their diets may develop thyroid conditions such as hypothyroidism, Hashimoto thyroiditis, and Graves’ disease.

6. MAGNESIUM
Magnesium is an incredible mineral that is involved in over 300 biochemical reactions in the human body. It’s needed for muscle and nerve function, protein synthesis, blood sugar regulation, DNA synthesis, and blood pressure control. Even your body’s most powerful antioxidant, glutathione, requires magnesium for its production. However, most individuals are not getting the recommended 400 mg of magnesium per day.

Summary:
Restricting calories is known to improve health and increase lifespan, but much of how it does so remains a mystery, especially in regard to how it protects the brain. Scientists have now uncovered a role for a gene called OXR1 that is necessary for the lifespan extension seen with dietary restriction and is essential for healthy brain aging.
