Ok, I promised a deodorant post, so here we go!! This is a long post, but I’m trying to help with your deo switch! It’s a big deal, guys. 😉
First let’s chat about why switching is a good idea. Antiperspirants (like I used all my life until a few years ago) contain aluminum to plog your sweat glands and keep you from sweating, and thus keeps you dry. But aluminum isn’t great for you and can be an endocrine disruptor—which means it can mess with your hormones. In addition to aluminum, Parabens (a preservative that can also effect your hormones), and fragrance (which we know can contain thousands of chemicals that don’t have to be disclosed) are usually in regular deodorants/antiperspirants.
How to switch:
Finding a natural/cleaner deodorant has been A WHOLE THING for this sweaty girl. I have tried at least 8. Some of them worked for a time, but all ended up not being great for me. I finally made the jump to Primally Pure and I have never looked back. I usually use Blue Tansy but I switched to the Charcoal for summer.
So. Transition time. You have been trapping sweat with anti-perspirants, so when you stop using that and switch to a natural deodorant, there WILL be a smelly transition that will last a couple of weeks. Your body is adjusting. What helps during this time-doing an armpit detox (like I posted about yesterday!) It helps pull out impurities, and helps keep you smelling fresh! But please do not go back to your old deodorant during this time. It will hurt the transition and make it last longer. Eventually, people generally report sweating less after making the switch.
A natural deodorant is NOT an antiperspirant. You will sweat some. However, when you find THE RIGHT natural deodorant, you won’t smell.
Also, some people are sensitive to Baking Soda. If you find that you are breaking out, check to see if your new deodorant has baking soda in it, and if it does many of companies make baking soda free versions. I used to break out early on, but after some time and switching it got better.
Whew. This has been a lot of info! I think it’s 100% worth it to make this switch.
