Limited space for NEW CLIENTS, book now to get your spot! Bringing a little bit of the PNW to the hair of East Texas

Sierra With the Scissors | Hair Salon in Tyler, TX 07/07/2026

I contemplated for several days whether I wanted to post this, but for respect to those that read my nonsense and my dedication to transparency, here we are.

I’m going to complain. One last time, perhaps.

One thing I’ve learned over the last 14,000ish days of flying on this rock through space, is that people are often far more comfortable with a version of you they’ve invented than the person standing in front of them. The moment you step outside of the role they’ve assigned you, things get weird.

Before I am a stylist, educator, business owner, or the feral bog witch on Facebook rambling about water quality and hair chemistry, I am a human being. I try to live my life guided by honesty, education, compassion, empathy, vulnerability, integrity, and accountability. Not perfection.

When I moved to East Texas, I was told by more than a few people that I wouldn’t make it here unless I conformed. That I needed to fit a mold. That my success required me to be smaller, quieter, more agreeable; in other words, more willing to compromise pieces of myself.

I tried that for a minute, against my better judgement.

Then I remembered where I came from.

I come from a place where everyone has a right to exist and access to success and prosperity, albeit grey and drizzling most of the year, a place where abundance exists because different people want different things.

Now here we are. Instead of forcing myself into “spaces that don’t have room” for me, I built my own.

And it just so happens, my people found it.

People looking for a quiet place. People looking for honesty. People looking for education instead of sales pitches. People looking for a stylist who would listen before speaking. People who needed a safe place to land for a few hours.

For that, I am incredibly grateful.

What I’m not grateful for is the culture that social media and certain spaces and many places often encourage. The gossip. The performative kindness. The unnecessary cruelty. The strange obsession people have with tearing down someone they’ve never taken the time to understand, often someone they’ve never even met.

I’ve spent more than twenty years in the beauty industry. I did my time as a baby stylist crying in the dispensary, the manager holding 100+ people together, the educator asking the baby cos student the hard questions that don’t have s**t to do with hair, the trauma and the drama, the late night identity crisis melting down over an over process or a too short cut, and the client having her second miscarriage or his first child. The weddings and the illness, the death and the graduation. I did commission and stage and hourly and leasing. Long before Facebook. Long before local groups. Long before algorithms rewarded outrage. My resume is extensive, well rounded, and deeply deserved.

And I’ve realized something:
I don’t need and I still don’t want social media. I never did.

The people who belong in my chair will continue to find me. They always have.

So moving forward, this page will remain up, and my messenger will remain open, for the future clients seeking a safe space. I’ll check in from time to time. But I am stepping away from the noise and I won’t be posting as often, if at all.

I’m available for the people I have the privilege to work with and will continue to nurture the space I’ve created for US.

If you’d like to know who I am, what I believe, how I treat people, or whether my values align with yours, come sit in my chair.

Or don’t.

🦖Fun fact:

The bond angle in water sits around 104.5° 💦

The bond angle associated with the molecular structure of curly hair is often discussed around the 100° range 🧬

🍺 Many of the alcohols commonly found in styling products? Around 109° and up.

What does that mean? 📣

It means textured hair is basically out here trying to negotiate peace treaties between water, humidity, and whatever mystery mousse somebody grabbed off the shelf because it smelled nice.

So when you’re sitting in a salon chair, the products matter. A lot.

🧼 Not every curl cream, gel, foam, oil, leave-in, serum, spray, custard, butter, milk, nectar, potion, tincture, or enchanted swamp brew is formulated with textured hair in mind. And not every stylist is equally experienced in how those products behave once they hit actual curls.

The result is often a scientific phenomenon known as “why is my hair doing that?”

🔥 Also known as frizz.

Curly hair isn’t difficult. It’s just chemistry with opinions.

👉🏽Tiny science disclaimer: hair behavior is influenced by a lot more than bond angles alone, but the point remains—texture-specific products and a stylist who understands them can make the difference between defined curls and looking like you lost a fistfight with the humidity.

I can tell you about the time I told someone exactly what I needed from the parts 🔩⚙️ department and he tried to mansplain at me that I didn’t know what I was talking about, so I brought him the manual to my car and pointed at the diagram and told him to do better 📖 🚙

We can laugh and laugh… you leave feeling better. And I’ll get a good giggle. It’s a win-win.

I went down a rabbit hole recently🕳️

🐕 My dogs like to watch Murder She Wrote when we leave for any amount of time, it’s Chuppie’s favorite. And while I was doing my usual fawning over the great wardrobe Jessica wears, I couldn’t help but be slightly offended by another actress’ hair 👩🏻‍🦱 like. Um. Ma’am. That’s really fuzzy.

But then I realized. They’re all fuzzy 👀
📣 Google!

I started to reminisce about elementary and middle school when I was slathering my hair with baby oil and using a clothes iron, girl, a clothes iron! To straighten my hair. Because I was TERRIFIED of the ever famous hot comb.

It was a problem indeed.

All that is to say, consider yourselves privileged for experiencing the evolution of appropriate hair care🧬

Here’s a read for ya 🤣 https://www.purewow.com/beauty/70s-hair-texture

🖤🌿 Field Notes from an Unhinged Hairstylist 🌿🖤

I’ve spent a lot of time observing people lately.

🌲 Not judging. Just… standing quietly in the metaphorical tree line like a suspicious woodland creature with excellent pattern recognition.

And I’ve noticed something fascinating. 🧐

The fear of change, but not because it changed, but because that thing that changed was the only secure thing left in one’s life. The one thing that would remain “unchanged”.

People will tell you to “be yourself,” then immediately become uncomfortable when you do.

Or carrying around emotional support grudges from 2007 like their family heirlooms.

☝🏽complaining about drama while personally hauling it from location to location like a traveling Renaissance fair.

And perhaps my favorite:

👏🏽 People will call someone “too much” when they finally put the mask down 🎭 after spending decades rewarding everyone for being too little, and now they don’t fit the agenda. The audacity of someone NOT fitting into your cute little box 👏🏽That looks👏🏽Like every👏🏽One else’s👏🏽

Anyway.

🐦‍⬛ The crows are watching.
🌳 The trees know things.
🦝 The raccoons have abandoned governance entirely.

🌺 As for me, I’m over here in swampy grassland, sipping iced coffee and collecting behavioral data like a Victorian naturalist who got lost at a therapy convention.

I remain elegantly unhinged.

Not because the world is chaotic.

Because I’ve seen the world, and this seems like this is the appropriate amount of hingedness. 🐦‍⬛✨🖤

Oh ya. Book an appointment. Let’s talk about it.

🕯️We haven’t gotten too philosophical lately, happy Sunday, here’s some brain stew 🧠

I’ve been reading Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer and this woman is now living rent free in my think box. 🌱

🐢 Robin reflects on her childhood memories and stories of her ancestors, telling the story of Sky Woman, turtle, mouse, and geese, reciprocity, gift economies, and the audacity of humans to put a barcode on things the Earth made without asking for a quarterly earnings report or the help of bodies with thumbs. Air? Water? Strawberries 🍓 growing feral in a ditch somewhere? Nobody invented those. Nobody “earned” a sunset. 🌅

🌰 She talks about this deep understanding that survival was once collaborative instead of competitive. That abundance isn’t ownership. That taking and giving were supposed to exist in balance instead of whatever spiritually dehydrated speedrun we’re doing now.

The more I sit with it, the more I understand that gratitude has changed the way I move through the world. I notice abundance differently. These are things I had the opportunity to give words to in 2020 after a long hospital stay (iykyk), a way of life I got to cultivate and now I get to nurture.

💰 I do hair for money because we unfortunately still live under capitalism and my mortgage company won’t accept ethically sourced berries and handmade baskets as payment 🧺.

But I also think there’s a difference between labor and extraction. We may have discussed this before too..

I think there’s a way to move through life linearly. ✨ Slowly. Intentionally. Taking what you need. Leaving things better. 📕 Sharing knowledge freely when you can. Refusing overconsumption as a personality trait. Building community instead of audiences. Treating people like ecosystems instead of transactions 🌍.

Maybe that’s why I get so feral about overconsumption and hustle culture and treating human beings like content farms with credit scores. We were not built to live like open browser tabs.

Anyway. Happy Sunday. Drink water 💧 . Thank a tree 🌲 . Tip your hairstylist. Consider becoming emotionally available to moss. 🍃 and DEFINITELY, touch some grass.

👉🏽 Do it.

The thing. 👈🏽

The thing you’ve been overthinking, side-eyeing 👀 , making pros-and-cons lists about, consulting the moon 🌖 , your best friend, three podcasts, and a crow that looked at you funny 🐦‍⬛.

Do it.

🗑️ Throw it away.
🔥 Burn it down.
🚪 Walk out.
🌱 Start over.

Or don’t start over. Sometimes the point of setting something on fire is simply refusing to carry it anymore.

🧚🏻‍♀️ This is me, your local bog-witch, swamp fairy, mildly unhinged hairstylist, officially granting permission to release whatever has been renting space in your head for free.

🤫 No explanation required.

✔️ You do not owe a dissertation.
✔️You do not owe a PowerPoint presentation.
✔️You do not owe anyone a twelve-part documentary explaining why you’ve chosen yourself.

👏🏽Take your permission and go.

Whether you’re channeling Dobby sock-in-hand freedom or Gollum hissing “mine” while reclaiming your peace, the outcome is the same:

💋You get to be gloriously, unapologetically feral.

🥪 Whatever has been eating your lunch? Take it back 🍴.

🚗 Whatever has been keeping you stuck? Move.

💭 Whatever has been whispering “what if?” for months?

Answer it.

… I’d rather collect a few “oops” stories than spend my life haunted by “what if.”

And when you’re done, come sit in my chair and tell me all about it.

I want to hear about the brave tea ☕️

👏🏽Take your permission. You have it now.

📢This one is for you, from Sierra With the Scissors, known lately as simply, The Swamp 🧝🏽‍♀️

👉🏽 it appears I have openings today and tomorrow 🤭

🪞 So if you’ve been staring at yourself in the mirror thinking, “Eh, that’ll probably sort itself out,” I regret to inform you that your hair has filed an appeal.

I’ve noticed that people will spend six months tolerating split ends, grown-out color, and a shampoo bottle held together by hope, spite, and the last remaining molecules of conditioner—but making the appointment? Apparently that’s where we draw the line 🛑

Friends.

The world is on fire 🔥

The grocery bill looks like a hostage note 📝

🦝 There are raccoons out there with better retirement plans than most of us.

📱 Book the hair appointment.

Get the trim. Refresh the color. Do the treatment. Allow yourself one tiny act of maintenance in a timeline that increasingly resembles a group project nobody wanted.

I’ve got room this Sunday and a couple spots on Monday.

💈 Come sit in my chair. Tell me about your latest hyperfixation, existential crisis, neighborhood gossip, or the strange thing you found growing in the back of the refrigerator.

I’ll handle the hair 💇🏽‍♀️

💻 book with me and claim your spot before the calendar remembers it’s supposed to be chaotic. ✨
