Marjorie Joyner

An outright revolution in the beauty industry, Marjorie Joyner began studying cosmetology in 1912. By 1916, she became the first Black female graduate of Chicago’s A.B. Molar Beauty School. By 20, she had opened her own salon.

Though Joyner is known for her early work and later becoming the national supervisor of Madame C.J. Walker’s Beauty Colleges (overseeing more than 200 beauty schools), what she’s often most recognized for—the permanent wave machine.

Tina Turner

“With her powerhouse vocals and incredible dance skills, it’s no wonder that Tina Turner is still one of the most influential names in music. But it isn’t just her talent we remember. Everyone knows and loves Turner’s iconic style, and her many wigs are just as iconic as her show-stopping fringe dresses.

Turner has mentioned several reasons why she’s sported wigs, from convenience to insecurities about her appearance. But without a doubt, her wigs have become a part of her image, from the straight brown wig from her earlier career to the teased blonde wig associated with the “What’s Love Got to Do with It” music video.“

The Supremes

In the 1960s, it seemed like everyone was wearing a wig, whether to achieve more volume for their hair or simply because it was convenient. The wig was all over the music world as well, and the Supremes took wigs to new heights.

The Motown girl group was the height of fashion during its heyday. The members’ style influenced the fashion choices of women everywhere—Black and White—and their wigs were part of their look. The bouffant hairstyle was already popular, but the Supremes made it more stylish than ever. They weren’t the first to don wigs, but they were certainly some of the most famous Black women to wear wigs at the time.

Annie Turnbo Malone

“Entrepreneur, scientist, philanthropist, Annie Turnbo Malone truly took the world—not just the cosmetology world, for that matter—by storm. A chemist by trade, Annie became a millionaire through her work of successfully developing and marketing hair products for Black women in St. Louis—but it was never as simple as marketing through direct channels.

As a Black woman, Annie was denied access to the regular distribution channels, so to sell her products she and her assistants went door-to-door and gave demonstrations. Her company eventually went national and by the early 1910s, Annie was a millionaire. All of that money didn’t sit stagnant, either. Annie established Poro College in St. Louis in 1918, a cosmetology school for Black women.

Sometimes, Annie’s success is overshadowed by the overwhelming success of Madame C.J. Walker—who was actually a former employee of Annie.”

“Christina Jenkins (1920 -)
If you were ever wondering who invented the first hair weaving process, look no further than Christina Jenkins. She received a patent in 1951 after launching her company Christina’s HairWeev Penthouse Salon with Duke Jenkins. Prior to that, she worked for a wig company and invented a more secure and longer-lasting installation process.

While there was nothing about wigs and hairpieces, she created a new way to attach the weave onto the hair, using thread instead of pins “

How cool is that?
