By the time 9-11 occurred, I had already lived through a great deal, having been born abroad, living in different volatile countries, and even seeing with my own eyes what a brutal military dictatorship is all about. I wasn’t naive or extremely innocent. But, I believed the United States was the safest place to live. Yet, on 9-11-2001, my nonchalant, carefree ways disappeared forever. I have not felt safe since. Now, I always feel guarded and hyper vigilant. On 9-11, I realized that there are no 100% safe places anywhere. I’m certain most of us who were alive before and in the days after 9-11 feel the same. 😢
