That rough spot on the bottom of your foot might not be a callus.

Plantar warts show up in exactly the same spots calluses do — the ball of the foot, the heel — which is why they get missed so often. The tell: tiny black dots inside the thickened skin (just small, clotted blood vessels), and pain when you squeeze the spot from the sides rather than press straight down on it.

They’re caused by HPV, picked up most often on damp locker room floors, pool decks, and shared showers. And once one shows up, drugstore acid pads often aren’t strong enough to clear it — the skin on the sole is just too thick.

As a podiatrist, I don’t just treat feet — I think about them every time I lace up. 👟

Here’s what I look for in a running shoe:

1. Arch Support — It should match your foot type. Flat feet need more medial support. High arches need cushioning.

2. Heel Drop — The difference in height between heel and toe affects how force travels up your leg. Lower isn’t always better.

3. Toe Box Width — Your toes need room to spread. A narrow toe box is one of the leading causes of bunions and neuromas.

4. Midsole Cushioning — Especially important if you’re on hard surfaces or logging long miles.

5. Fit Over Brand — The most expensive shoe isn’t always the right shoe for you.
