I remember being in middle school, walking out of the cafeteria, when I saw Sabrina Negron run past me crying hysterically.

And then I learned why.

It was everywhere. The news. The televisions. The conversations. The fear. It felt like the entire world just… stood still.

Now, as an adult, I’ll see old footage from that day and it brings me right back. We didn’t have cell phones in our hands. People were trying to call home, trying to find their families, waiting for someone to answer. So many people went to work that morning and simply never came home.

And there are still people here today who can tell the story of exactly what they saw, what they survived and who they lost.

Being from the Northeast, New York was never some faraway place to me. This felt incredibly close to home. It changed us.

But one thing I will never forget is what happened afterward.

New Yorkers came together in a way that I wish the whole country (and honestly, the whole world) could have seen. People took care of each other. Strangers helped strangers. There was so much love, respect and camaraderie during one of the most horrific times imaginable.

I wish we could find some of that again.

Not the tragedy. Not the fear.

The way we loved each other afterward.

Twenty-five years later, I hope we never become so removed from that day that we forget what happened here in our country, the lives that were lost, the people who survived, and the families who still carry it with them.

And I hope we remember how much better we are when we take care of one another, no matter where we’re from, what we believe, or who we are.
