This was a great talk! I had no idea how much “wish recycling” can gum up the works. It really made me think twice about what I toss in the recycling bin. Check out the video at OneLagoon.org!

A big thank you to Heather Stapleton from OneLagoon.org for helping us kick off our Green Team Potluck series with her presentation, “What’s Up in the Watershed: My Plastic Diet.” It was a thoughtful and timely reminder that the health of our community and the Indian River Lagoon is connected to the choices we make every day.

A few key takeaways:

*Recycling helps, but it is not the whole answer.
*Reducing plastic use before it becomes waste is even better.
*Single-stream recycling has challenges, especially when items are contaminated or placed in the bin by mistake.
*Small changes matter, like using reusable cups, bags, and containers.

Our everyday choices affect our watershed, our wildlife, and the health of the lagoon.

Learning together makes change easier and more encouraging.

Heather’s message was a perfect way to begin an evening of food, fellowship, and Green Team conversation.

Thank you to everyone who came, shared a dish, listened, and helped make the gathering warm and meaningful.

We get together every 2nd Saturday from 9 to 12

GROWING TOGETHER IN INDIAN RIVER COUNTY

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us for our recent Unity Community Garden Cleanup Day. What an incredible afternoon of teamwork, connection, and progress.

Over a dozen volunteers came together to help w**d, rake, clean pathways, and prepare the garden beds for the next phase of development. Thanks to everyone’s hard work, the space is already beginning to transform from simple soil mounds into a vibrant community garden filled with possibility.

We were especially encouraged by the spirit of collaboration throughout the day. Conversations naturally flowed about gardening, composting, permaculture, sustainability, and ways to make the garden a welcoming space for the entire community. We were also honored to welcome visitors from outside our local area, including a visitor from Bangladesh, whose humanitarian work inspired many meaningful conversations.

As we move forward, we are planning additional raised beds, improved pathways, composting projects, educational workshops, and seasonal planting activities. We are also working on better signage and volunteer task boards to help make participation easier and more interactive for everyone.

Most importantly, this project is about more than gardening. It is about building community, creating friendships, sharing knowledge, and reconnecting with nature together.

Thank you again to everyone who contributed their time, energy, ideas, refreshments, and enthusiasm. Every small effort helped move this vision forward.
We are excited for what comes next and look forward to growing
together!

Why not? Perfect example of built in upcycling! What other packaging could be designed with a purpose beyond temporarily holding some product?

If it were up to me, all bottled products would have dual use...
