It’s hard to believe that 25 years have passed since September 11, 2001. I can still remember exactly where I was and what I was doing that day.
I was a senior at Memorial High School on what felt like a mundane September morning. I drove to school as usual and went to class, never realizing that the world I knew would never be quite the same just a few hours later.
I remember my journalism teacher turning on the news and seeing smoke rising from the World Trade Center. The classroom was completely silent except for a few hushed whispers. At that point, I thought a plane had accidentally hit the tower. Just three months earlier, my family had driven past those very towers while on vacation in New York. It was difficult to comprehend what I was seeing.
The next bell rang, and we switched classes. I went to Business Communications, where I watched the second plane hit.
That was the moment we knew this was no accident.
The rest of the day became a blur of fear, confusion and disbelief. Another plane struck the Pentagon, and another went down in a field in Pennsylvania.
It’s difficult to describe all the feelings of that day in one Facebook post, but I am going to try.
For me, September 11th signified a loss of innocence. It was the realization that true evil exists in this world and that America was vulnerable in a way I had never understood before. The sense of safety I had always taken for granted suddenly felt fragile.
There was a palpable feeling of apprehension across our country after 9/11. But out of one of the darkest days in American history came something I will also never forget: our solidarity as a country.
It brought us together in a way I have never witnessed since.
For a time, there was a feeling among Americans that we were ALL ONE.
We grieved the people who died that day as though they were our own relatives, friends and neighbors. We celebrated the courage of first responders and the resilience of the people of New York and Washington. We checked on our neighbors and looked out for our communities. American flags seemed to be everywhere.
Our differences suddenly seemed so much smaller than what we shared.
This year, reflecting on the events of September 11th has had a profound effect on me. I have felt called to write this because I believe there is something from those days that America desperately needs to remember.
We have become increasingly divided. We have found ways to separate ourselves by political party, race, religion, s*x, s*xual orientation, culture and countless other labels. Too often, those labels seem to come before the simple recognition that the person on the other side of an issue is still our neighbor, our coworker, our friend, our family member and our fellow American.
We are beginning to see what that kind of fragmentation can do to a country.
My hope for America this September 11th is that, even if only for a moment, we put those labels aside.
Not because we all agree. We never will, and we don’t have to.
But because disagreement should never prevent us from recognizing one another’s humanity.
Twenty-five years later, I hope we remember more than the horror of September 11th. I hope we remember the nearly 3,000 lives that were taken, the families who never got to say goodbye, the first responders who ran toward unimaginable danger, and the countless lives that were forever changed.
But I also hope we remember who we were to one another afterward.

We were neighbors.

We were compassionate.

We were resilient.

We were Americans.

It should not take another tragedy to bring us together again.
So on this September 11th, I hope we honor those we lost not only by remembering how they died, but by remembering how we chose to live in the days that followed—with compassion for our neighbors, gratitude for our country and the understanding that, despite all of our differences, there is still far more that unites us than divides us.
May we never forget the lives we lost, the heroes who answered the call, and the way we once came together as one. 🇺🇸We are still one nation, and I pray we find our way back to one another. 🇺🇸

Here’s what I’d start focusing on:
