The retaining ligaments of the face are strong and deep fibrous attachments that originate from the periosteum or deep facial fascia and travel perpendicularly through facial layers to insert onto the dermis

✨ Ligaments are important in understanding concepts of facial aging and rejuvenation.

The facial nerve is the seventh cranial nerve, or simply CN VII.

The facial nerve has five main branches, although the anatomy can vary somewhat between individuals.
The branches are, from top to bottom:
1. frontal (or temporal)
2. zygomatic
3. buccal
4. marginal mandibular
5. cervical.

Each of these branches provides input to a group of muscles of facial expression.

Fat pads are thought to be present to facilitate the gliding of muscles in movement, whilst also protecting the sensitive facial muscles from injury. It is vital we understand the facial anatomy of fat pads when delivering dermal filler treatments.

The fat pads can be divided into superficial and deep compartments:
