A friend of mine from Asheville said she’s exhausted from seeing posts about the floods but also exhausted from seeing posts not about the floods. This made total sense to me.

I’ve thought a lot over the past 10 days about the purpose of social media during times like this. While I believe it’s been extraordinarily helpful in terms of disseminating information quickly, it’s also served as an open invitation for fake news and exaggeration. Additionally, for the people in a state of devastation and despair, it can also feel disorienting seeing the rest of the world move forward as normal. But in further contrast, social media can serve as a brief escape if it offers amusement or knowledge.

With all that being said, I’m having a hard time figuring out what to do with social media right now. I decided to go ahead and post my Word of the Month in a way that I hope feels inclusive to everyone and not emotionally charged one way or the other.

It’s funny because I chose the word for October (GATHER) back in January. When I thought about “gather” all those months ago, I thought about it in terms of gathering together inside as the weather gets cooler and gathering one’s harvest to prepare for the colder days of winter.

But now, GATHER takes on new meanings. I feel like it’s a time to gather strength, hope and faith during this post-Helene period which is excruciatingly challenging for so many. It’s a time to gather cleaning supplies, water, food, clothes, coloring books and many other items for those who’ve lose so much during the raging waters.

Most importantly, it’s a time to gather together, to lean on one another for love, support, and encouragement. Humans are a social, tribal species. We’re not meant to live in isolation or handle hardships alone, so in the coming months and years as we work to rebuild so many beautiful Western North Carolina towns and cities, let’s do it together, in both body and spirit. Sending so much love to all who are hurting or suffering. ❤️

Savannah has been a part of the Gerrish MedEsthetics family since 2020. She is our Medical Esthetician and skincare specialist. She is also an AMI trainer and has over 16 years in the the industry.

We asked Savannah what she loves most about her job and here’s what she had to say, “I love the relationships I have built over the years with all of my clients! Watching their confidence grow and the friendships we’ve made. 🤍

Before becoming this amazing master esthetician, Savannah was a dance major in college! As a majorette her specialty was twirling fire batons. She has danced in a Hula Bowl and danced in a Capezio commercial with American tap dancer, choreographer and actor Savion Glover!!
