This isn't just an opinion — I actually researched and wrote a paper on this back in 2013, advocating for them to be banned from product manufacturing. We were successful — Microbead-Free Waters Act of 2015 prohibited microbeads in Virginia and in the US! Here's why it mattered so much:⁠

Microbeads are often plastic, and as they travel through our drain systems, they absorb toxic chemicals along the way. Because they're so tiny, water filtration systems can't catch them — so they end up straight in our rivers and the Chesapeake Bay.⁠
⁠
Fish then eat them, mistaking them for fish eggs, which is toxic to them (and eventually to us, through what we catch and eat). Health risks have already been linked to fishing in the Chesapeake Bay and Great Lakes because of this.⁠
⁠
The kicker? Research shows it'll take decades for the ecosystem to recover, since microbeads don't fully decompose — they just work deeper into the soil with no real way to process them.⁠

Unfortunately, many states gave manufacturers 3-6 years to comply. With how easy online shopping makes it to order from anywhere, some products still slip through the cracks — much like microbeads slip through our water filtration systems. 👀⁠

The most frustrating part? They're not even cost-effective for companies compared to more sustainable exfoliants like walnut, rice, coffee, or seed-based options. There's no good excuse.⁠
