From the day we opened our first location to now operating two stores, we have been aware of a Chinese-owned massage business in South Jersey with many employees. We believe it has repeatedly targeted other massage businesses with malicious negative reviews while paying for positive reviews of its own. We believe as many as 70% of its positive reviews were paid for.

When another business starts doing better, we believe it sends people to watch that business and leave negative reviews. In the past, it relied on reviews. Since TikTok became popular, we believe it has also paid influencers $500 or $1,000 to make videos that damage other businesses’ reputations.

I’m tired of seeing what I believe is the same tactic used against us and other businesses year after year. We have known about it for a long time but chose not to respond. We believe in fair competition and have focused on running our business. Staying quiet, however, does not mean we have to accept this behavior.

Unfair competition can take many forms: paying an influencer to visit another business and post a negative video, then having someone quietly mention your own business in the comments to draw customers away. If that is happening, the paid connection should be disclosed. Honest reviews are welcome; hidden promotions are misleading
