ACCEPTANCE SPEECH:
I am BLACK history…
In honor of my great grand mother Lucille Jiles aka Little Mom, an Eastern Star, a political activist in the 60's during the Civil Rights movement and obtained a college degree and a master's degree, as a Black women in rural Alabama (Jim Crow era) and became the 1st Black to hold the position of Superintendent of Troy Alabama then segregated school system….
In honor of my grandmother Alcine Utley, entrepreneur and community activist in Trenton, NJ who fought for change and was the strong voice for those who were not heard.
In honor of my mother, Mary R Utley, a student activist who joined the movement to desegregate her very own highschool in Eutawville, South Carolina and survived various schemes of intimidation, force, and violence to ensure that everyone had a right to an education.
In honor of Thomas Utley who was a Union army civil war veteran to fight for freedom and Buffalo soldier.
