With the isolation of COVID and the increase awareness of Mental Health & Wellness we started to see an increase of emotional releases, panic attacks, anxiety, and depression coming into our clinic and massage therapist practices. More and more clients talking out loud about being "stressed out", "burnt out", "over stimulated", "mentally exhausted", and "unable to sleep".

🤓In 2025 the AMTA reported only 29% of consumers viewed massage as pampering while 86% considered it part of their health care routine.

Our response to this was adding to our curriculum a portion specifically addressing the area of mental health and wellness.

Meet on the right, Cheyenne Ross, LCPC with Director of Admissions and current massage instructor, Emily Waltz. Cheyenne is a local mental health counselor and owner of her own private practice. She is currently halfway through a 3 year program to specialize in Somatic Therapy.

Cheyenne helps our students understand mental health awareness of...
🌿anxiety & depression
🌿stress & burnout
🌿grief & loss
🌿loneliness & isolation
🌿body image concerns
🌿trauma and its potential effects on the body
🌿when a clients behavior may indicate they need further support
👉And most of all...the goal of RECOGNITION and REFERRAL not diagnosis!!

Studies are showing that now, more than ever, there is a need for massage schools to educate in the areas of:

touch - communication - boundaries - trauma awareness - stress - mindfulness - nervous system concepts - referral skill - and
SELF CARE FOR THE MASSAGE THERAPIST!

Part of the DSM mission has always been to be open to holistic philosophy and pave the way for massage in Maine. We continue to raise the bar as changes in our profession present.

We are very excited to begin the September 2026 Therapeutic Massage Program!!!

One of my most favorite things is having new students begin our program with the idea of being a massage therapist but as the months go on watching them not only BECOME massage therapists but find their own IDENTITY in massage therapy. It's as natural and beautiful as this rainbow!
