The 3 main stages of the hair growth cycle are:

1. Anagen — Growth phase: Hair actively grows from the follicle. This phase can last 2–7 years, and most scalp hairs are in this stage at any given time.
2. Catagen — Transition phase: Hair stops actively growing and the follicle begins to shrink. This is a short phase, usually around 2–3 weeks.
3. Telogen — Resting/shedding phase: The hair rests and eventually falls out, allowing a new hair to begin growing from the follicle. This phase generally lasts a few months.

You may also hear about a fourth stage called exogen, which specifically describes the shedding of the old hair. In the traditional 3-stage model, exogen is included within telogen.

For waxing purposes, the anagen (active growth) phase is generally the ideal phase to target because the hair is actively connected to the follicle. However, you can’t reliably tell which phase an individual hair is in, and hairs on the same body area are naturally at different stages.

That’s why consistent waxing every 4-6 weeks is more important than trying to time one appointment to a specific growth phase. Over time & repeated waxing, more hairs tend to be removed during their active growth periods, which can help create a more synchronized cycle and reduce the appearance of regrowth.

The secret isn’t waiting for the hair to get long, it’s staying consistent.
