At today's 9:30am Basics & Beyond class at Lighthouse Yoga Center, we wrap up August's theme: Warrior. Since seeing my friend Victor in July - the same week that the protesters rose up in Puerto Rico and just before my birthday - I've been questioning my own "role" in this hurting world. What is my warrior nature? Is it there anymore?
I used to call myself a Spiritual Warrior - one who utilizes the Eight Limbs of Yoga as a design for living as wholly and responsibly as possible. But most recently, have I even been doing that? Last fall, I left my job managing, teaching, and guiding teacher trainings at a yoga studio. I moved away from my beloved DC streets to a Maryland suburb. My recovery meeting locations and vibes changed drastically. In November, I witnessed my dear father's death. I spent the winter living with a down to earth couple and their three dogs - while struggling to make ends meet. Then, this spring, I took a new job in a new line of work; and I now complement that with a humbling two yoga classes per week.
This entire time, I only practiced yoga at home, and my Sadhana primarily included Pranayama and chanting. I gained weight, my body started acting its age, and only periodically did I crack open a yoga text.
Reflecting on this, while immersed in my Warrior theme, I've come to understand and believe: in order to strengthen from last spring's totally debilitating su***de attempt, I had to completely remove myself from any potential triggers. And honestly, elements of the yoga industry, the urban streets, and group houses were getting the best of me. I also realized: I had to let go...completely...of everything. I took a risk, left behind the familiar, and began a process of deconstructing my existence. Dad's death would prove a huge contributor to that process. So would gradually letting my guard down while living in the presence of two caring, hard-working, joyful people - in a neighborhood free from the subtle and glaring threats of city streets. As would starting a different line of work.
Finally reaching a state of openness, I've started to rebuild - financially, physically, spiritually, socially, psychologically, geographically. Holistically.
Last week, I had an Herbal Wellness Consultation with the resident herbalist at my new gig at Georgetown Massage and Bodywork - Erin Antosh of Where The Good Grows. Not only did she help me establish a new, nourishing regimen - she also cheered me on with great encouragement. Knowing that I'm moving to my own apartment soon, she assured me that new confidence and energy would grace this turning point. And I agree.
Indeed, this September, I move to Flower Avenue in Takoma Park. Not quite DC, y'all. But somewhere between city and suburb...close to the peace of Sligo Creek Park and the buzz of Langley Park.
My Own Place.
I believe: only by deconstructing to a point of healthy vulnerability could I have evolved to this point of strength. I think about the great Warrior, Hanuman, and how he didn't even know his own strength, until he found his purpose. In his devotion to Sita and Ram, he was powerful enough to move mountains, and, vulnerable enough to display an open heart.
In this fresh state of being, I eagerly await what's next.
Love and gratitude.
OM Shanti. Holly

Are mosquitoes and gnats messing with your summer happy vibes? A great way to use essential oils is to create your own natural bug spray or body lotion. Add any combination of lemon tea tree, rosemary, peppermint, lemongrass, sage, lavender, and geranium essential oils (to name a few) to unscented lotion or a spray bottle mixed with water, vitamin e, and a carrier oil. Spritz or apply to exposed skin when outside and watch those bu**ers swarm and take a quick detour.
We just added a fresh batch of Bug Off spray to our shelves. 🚫🦟
