Railway Museum Visit by Munda– Celebrating Zambia’s Industrial Heritage
Recently, I had the privilege of visiting the Railway Museum in Livingstone, and I would like to share why this experience deepened my commitment to protecting and promoting our nation’s heritage.
When I stepped onto the museum grounds, I did not simply see old trains; I saw Zambia’s story of resilience, unity, and progress. The vintage steam locomotives, dating back to the 19th century, along with historic photographs and railway memorabilia, tell the story of a transport system that played a vital role in shaping our nation. These locomotives were primarily used for rail transport and logging operations, contributing significantly to economic development.
The Railway Museum also houses a separate Jewish Heritage Exhibition, reflecting an important part of Livingstone’s diverse history. This reminded me that heritage is not only about traditional dances, languages, and cultural attire; it is also about the industrial achievements that helped build our nation.
Livingstone was once known as the Railway Capital of Southern Africa, serving as a key hub that connected Zambia with neighboring countries. Through trade, economic growth, and cultural exchange, the railway brought people together and created opportunities for countless communities. Standing there, I reflected on how these railways carried miners, farmers, families, and dreams across the region—just as they continue to connect people today.
This visit taught me that true heritage advocacy means embracing every aspect of Zambia’s past, not just the ceremonial parts. The Railway Museum was declared a National Monument in 1987 and was officially opened by our founding President, Dr. Kenneth Kaunda, as a symbol of our post-independence pride.
By visiting this remarkable site, I honor every chapter of our story—the dances, the crafts, the speeches, and the steam engines that moved a nation forward. Preserving and promoting our heritage is about ensuring that future generations understand where we have come from, appreciate how far we have progressed, and remain inspired to build an even stronger Zambia. Greetings Zambia.
My name is Nakweti Namunji, and as part of my advocacy on Diversity in Heritage, I recently visited Kabwata Cultural Village. Here is what I learned.
I learned that the houses in Kabwata were originally built in 1933 for civil servants when the capital of Northern Rhodesia was being moved from Livingstone to Lusaka. By 1934, construction was complete. These houses gave me a glimpse of what Lusaka once looked like, from the town center all the way to Chilenje.
I also learned that many of these historic houses were later demolished. However, some were preserved and protected as a heritage site. Today, this place is known as Kabwata Cultural Village and stands proudly as one of Zambia’s important cultural heritage sites.
What touched me most was the vibrant artistic community within the village. Kabwata Cultural Village is home to approximately 70 to 80 resident artists and craftsmen, many of whom specialize in wood carving. They create beautiful handmade products including wood carvings, baskets, beadwork, traditional textiles, drums, wall ornaments, and many other cultural souvenirs that showcase Zambia’s rich traditions.
I also learned that refugees from Poland settled in Kabwata in 1949 and contributed to the development of the area. This taught me an important lesson: heritage is strengthened by diversity. People from different backgrounds can come together to preserve, celebrate, and enrich Zambia’s cultural identity.
Kabwata Cultural Village is more than just a village. It is living proof that when we preserve our heritage, we keep our history alive, create opportunities for artists and craftsmen, and inspire future generations to appreciate and respect all cultures.
That is the true meaning of Diversity in Heritage.

Constructed in 1974 to commemorate ten years of Zambia’s independence, the Freedom Statue honors those who fought and sacrificed for the nation’s liberation. It helps us understand the journey Zambia took to become an independent nation on 24th October 1964.
4. A Symbol of Unity and National Pride
The Freedom Statue is one of Zambia’s most recognizable national symbols. It appears on the Zambian Kwacha and serves as a gathering point during national celebrations such as Independence Day and Africa Freedom Day.
5. Life Lessons from the Freedom Statue
The monument teaches important values, including:
* Courage – standing firm even in difficult situations.
* Resilience – never giving up despite challenges.
