This only happens once a year! Tomorrow at 3 PM, the Japanese Embassy will perform the traditional lantern lighting on the Tidal Basin.

The Japanese Lantern was gifted to the city of Washington, D.C. on March 30, 1954 and is older than the United States itself! Originally carved in 1651, the granite lantern stands eight and a half feet tall and weighs 4,000 pounds. It is the oldest free-standing, man-made stone structure standing outdoors in our nation's capital. Learn more: https://nationalmall.org/content/japanese-lantern

Once located on Independence Avenue, the Trust helped move the lantern to the Tidal Basin’s edge to create a new home for this storied artifact. In 2013, we led the construction of the Stone Lantern Plaza to implement paved walkways, plantings and large weathered boulders that create sense of place for the centuries old lantern. Constructed to be ecologically friendly, the plaza was built to protect the nearby cherry trees from soil erosion and compaction. The lantern was also relocated to make it more accessible to visitors — including the millions who come to see the cherry blossoms each spring.

'Either we have hope within us or we don't. It is a dimension of the soul and is not essentially dependent on some particular observation of the world. It is an orientation of the spirit, an orientation of the heart. It transcends the world that is immediately experienced and is anchored somewhere beyond its horizons...

Hope is definitely not the same thing as optimism. It is not the conviction that something will turn out well, but the certainty that something makes sense regardless of how it turns out. It is hope, above all, which gives the strength to live and continually try new things.' ― Vaclav Havel
