If you haven’t been using makeup primer, then you’re really missing out.

Whether you wear a full face of makeup everyday or you prefer to keep it simple with BB or CC cream and tinted lip balm, makeup primer is a key Product when trying to combat shine or create a smooth base for foundation.

Yet, many people often skip this step because they believe they don’t really need it, are unsure of how to use it or don’t think it’s worth the investment.

However, using primer underneath your makeup will make everything last longer, whether that’s on your skin or in your cosmetics bag. We asked two beauty experts to discuss the ins and outs of primer and why it’s a must-have. Here’s the deal.
Makeup primer is a base for foundation or face makeup that allows it to go on smoother and last longer.

Many Formulas are available in cream, gel and powder. While moisturizer softens skin, primer prepares skin for your favorite tinted moisturizer or foundation, giving it something to hold onto so it lasts throughout the day.

Many makeup primers are formulated with silicone-based polymers, like dimethicone, because of their ultra-smoothing effects. If you have Cystic acne do a patch test with primers first.

Makeup primers can also help smooth any fine lines, wrinkles or large pores. If you’re searching for a face primer to help color-correct rosacea or conceal acne spots, Add a little CC cream or any concealer in light green to your primer, because light green cancels out redness.

Primers are even available just for your eyelids to prevent creasing which Farmasi has for you too.

I’d recommend pairing a Farmasi eye shadow primer with cream or powder eyeshadow or our eyeliners for a look that will really stay put says. If you have oilier eyelids, I suggests you use a Farmasi translucent powered or neural powder for a mattifying look.

Primer is a life-saver for getting your makeup to stay put in extreme weather. If you live, visit or plan on traveling anywhere that experiences either hot and humid or cold and dry temperatures.

Keep primer handy to help your makeup wear longer. This extra step will save you a lot of time and effort preventing makeup from fading or slipping.

Primer can even be worn on its own. Love the fresh no-makeup look but want to look a bit more polished than when you first woke up? Primer is your answer. The product can be worn on your eyelids and double as a light eyeshadow, or it can serve as a lighter alternative to foundation just a tiny amount of BB, CC or foundation in the mix.

In regard to application, makeup artists Allan Avendaño, Mary Phillips, and Robin Black all recommend using fingers to apply primer, as they say it's the best and easiest way to blend everything and get a seamless finish. "A makeup brush will just drag the primer around," says Phillips, who adds, "If you're a germophobe, you can always use a slightly damp Beautyblender sponge."

We recommend giving primer a full minute to dry before layering anything on top in order to avoid disturbing the makeup. "The trick with any primer is to make sure it’s applied in a small dime-to-nickel-size amount and it's fully blended in first [before going in with foundation]," says Avendaño, who explains that this is why he likes to use his fingers to control the spreadability and make sure the primer doesn't pill-up or gather anywhere on the skin. "Apply lightly and sparingly is my go-to rule for primers," he adds.

A tip from makeup artist Vincent Oquendo, who, like Avendaño, also advises starting off small, is to tailor the amount of primer you use based on your skin type. For example, he says that someone with extremely dry skin that tends to absorb makeup more quickly can handle a quarter-size dollop of primer, whereas someone with oily skin should stick to the bare minimum because it sits on the surface longer. Once you get into half-dollar territory, however, you've gone overboard. A little goes a long way with primer, and too much can sabotage your makeup look before you ever get to create it.

Finally, if you want to disguise wrinkles, pores, or the odd blemish or two, then you can just use primer on the areas you want to cover. Sq**rt a pumpkin-seed-size dollop on the back of your hand, and dab it on with your fingers using a light patting motion, or try applying with a foundation brush to fill deeper wrinkles.
