Shade matching this way is easier at places like Ulta and Sephora because they have testers, but if you are testing drug store brands, just make sure to keep your receipt to return the product if it is the wrong shade. A pain I know, but better that than to be stuck with the wrong shade of foundation 😊

I'd like to add that you can easily overdo it with astringents, but not with toners. I never recommend using astringents and they are so stripping of the natural properties of your skin. In fact, the only time I use them or recommend using them, is when prepping a client's skin for a chemical peel.
